Transfer insider claims Tottenham have emerged as 'frontrunners' to sign Premier League star with 68 goals and 21 assists

Spurs have emerged as one of the ‘frontrunners’ to sign Premier League striker Ivan Toney, but face competition from other clubs.

That is according to transfer insider Dean Jones, who has confirmed Tottenham’s interest in Brentford’s Ivan Toney

Speaking to GiveMeSports, he said:

“The first thing to look for with Toney is whether or not he does actually sign a new contract. There’s been a lot of talk around it.

But so far, there’s nothing in place for him to actually do that. And then all the talk around the new contract was that would include a release clause, which would need to be triggered in the summer for somebody to sign him. Now at the moment with that not in place, it obviously seems more feasible that Toney is attainable in the summer.”

“I think there are a lot of clubs that genuinely are looking at Toney, I think that Arsenal and Chelsea are the two main ones. In the background, Tottenham and even Manchester United are having a look just in case the situation could change in a way that suits them.”

“The news suggests that the striker draws interest from various clubs in the English top flight, with London rivals Chelsea and Arsenal emerging as frontrunners alongside Tottenham.”

Ivan Toney has less than eighteen months remaining on his contract with Brentford, which is set to expire next summer.

He joined The Bees from Peterborough in 2020 and has made 123 appearances for them scoring 68 goals and assisting 21 across all competitions.

Last season, he netted 20 times in 33 league appearances last season, ranking as the third-highest scorer in the division, only behind Erling Haaland and Harry Kane.

And he could have scored even more, but unfortunately, his season was cut short. He received an eight-month ban from football by the FA due to numerous breaches of their player betting rules.

The player himself recently expressed a desire for a significant move to a top club. Toney stated (via Fabrizio Romano):

“Everyone knows that I would love to play for a top team and be at the top of the leagues, playing with the best”.

Journalist Ryan Taylor recently claimed that while Arsenal and Spurs are keen on signing him, Tottenham should not be ruled out of the race.

Spurs are still on the hunt for a direct replacement for Harry Kane who left the club for Bayern in August.

And the club sees Ivan Toney as a formidable goal-getter who could step into Kane’s shoes.
