The lone loss of Alexander Volkanovski's UFC career came against Islam Makhachev at the beginning of 2023. Now, the Aussie can get revenge in his second attempt at holding two belts at UFC 294 on October 21. The fight for Makhachev’s UFC lightweight title takes place in Abu Dhabi and airs on ESPN+ PPV. 

A 2016 World Championships gold medalist, Makhachev made his pro debut in 2010. Joining the UFC that same year, Makhachev is on an 11-fight win streak. In October 2022, he beat Charles Oliveira via submission to win the vacant UFC lightweight title and successfully defended the belt against Volkanovski in a close fight. 

Volkanovski turned pro in 2012. Joining the UFC in 2016, he is 12-0 with the promotion. Beating Max Holloway in 2019 for the UFC featherweight title, VolkanovFolivski has defended the belt five times, twice against Holloway. After losing to Makhachev, Volkanovski successfully retained his featherweight title against Yair Rodriguez in July.

The Volkanovski-Makhachev rematch was booked on 10 days' notice after Volkanovski's original opponent, Charles Oliveira, injured himself while training.

Another fight that was switched was the co-main event between Khamzat Chimaev and Paulo Costa. Recovering from surgery, Costa backed out and former UFC welterweight champion Usman moved elected to move up in weight to replace him.
