Wales v Ireland, the bitter ball-gate row and the topless woman Mike Phillips will never forget

Wales take on Ireland in a Grand Slam showdown this weekend. It will be the final Six Nations game of Warren Gatland's tenure as Wales boss. The infamous Ball-gate row of 2011 centred around Mike Phillips' touchline hugging run and dab down in the corner.

Wales beat Ireland 19-13 at Millennium Stadium. Mike Phillips' try in the 50th minute was controversial. Matthew Rees had used a different ball to the one kicked into touch by Jonathan Sexton. The laws of the game state that a line-out can only be taken if the identical ball which has gone out of play is used. Referee Jonathan Kaplan confirmed that Ree's ball was used in that move.

Mike Phillips scored a try for Wales against Ireland. It was his 50th cap. Phillips will never forget the picture of his try celebration. He didn't see the ball go into Row Z and he took his opportunity. He has been on the receiving end of many unlucky things in rugby. The element of surprise is key when defences are good. Brian O'Driscoll had scored the first try of the game to level Ian Smith's Championship record of 24 tries. Jonathan Kaplan and the touch judge didn't believe him. O’Drisoll didn”t ask the video official to use the review. He was eventually convinced by the judge. If he had made an error, he would be embarrassed.

Paddy Power refunded over £175,000 to the bookmakers for losing bets on the match between Ireland and Wales. Paddy O'Brien, the International Rugby Board's referee manager, offered an apology on behalf of the entire officiating team.
