West Ham United vs Chelsea predictions

It has been quite the week for Chelsea.

The Blues began the 2023/24 season - and the Mauricio Pochettino era - with a 1-1 draw with Liverpool on Sunday.

The visitors to Stamford Bridge made the stronger start, deservedly taking the lead through Luis Diaz in the 18th minute.

But Chelsea were not fazed. They fought their way back into the game and were the superior side in the second half. By full-time, they were a little unfortunate not to have picked up maximum points.

In the days that followed, Chelsea beat Liverpool twice - not in a football match, but to the signatures of Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia. In addition, Michael Olise looks set to join from Crystal Palace.

For the second successive summer, the west Londoners have spent a huge amount of money. The long-term implications of their outlay under Todd Boehly remain to be seen.

Yet there is no doubt that their work in the market has produced a squad which is younger, more vibrant and more in tune with Pochettino’s preferences.

There is thus plenty of positivity around the club right now, as Chelsea seek a top-four finish following their dismal showing last term.

A victory here would get Chelsea up and running for the new campaign, but West Ham will have something to say about that.

Which way will this London derby go?

Chelsea looked bright against Liverpool and a similar showing here should be enough to bring them all three points against West Ham.

Chelsea to win - 10/11 (bet365)

It will be interesting to see the XI that Pochettino picks for this game. He will no doubt be tempted to field Caicedo from the get-go, but Lavia is unlikely to be involved.

Given the many plus points that could be taken from the Liverpool performance, Caicedo for Conor Gallagher may well be the only change.

Pochettino had a difficult time at Paris Saint-Germain, despite winning silverware there. But at Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur, he proved himself to be a fantastic Premier League manager.

His teams played energetic, dynamic football and that is what Chelsea fans will want to see this season. They certainly did not in 2022/23.

No one should get ahead of themselves just yet, though. The Blues will find it difficult to challenge for the Premier League title, for instance.

True, they finished atop the table in the debut campaign of Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti and Antonio Conte, but the competition will be fiercer this time around.

Moreover, the extent of the turnover within the squad means Chelsea are not yet the well-oiled machine they will hope to become.

The feel-good factor is back, though, and that should help Chelsea on their way to victory this weekend.

Over 2.5 goals - 5/6 (Spreadex)

Last season was one of the best in West Ham’s entire history. For the first time since 1980, the east London outfit won a major trophy in the form of the Europa Conference League.

They struggled in the Premier League, though, and were not sure of their place in the top tier for 2023/24 until the penultimate weekend of the campaign.

The summer has also been difficult: Declan Rice was sold to Arsenal and Lucas Paqueta could be about to join Manchester City.

David Moyes came close to the sack on several occasions last season and he will no doubt come under pressure again if West Ham start the season badly.

But as far as motivation is concerned, the Hammers will not be short of it on Sunday. This is a London derby and one they will be desperate to win.

The main criticism of Moyes is that he can at times be overly cautious. But West Ham’s best chance of causing an upset here would be to get after Chelsea.

The Hammers have only won one of their last six meetings with the Blues. That solitary success was a 3-2 victory in December 2021.

We fancy this to be another entertaining encounter featuring at least three goals.

Raheem Sterling to score any time - 12/5 (Paddy Power)

Raheem Sterling would be the first to admit that he did not enjoy the best of maiden seasons at Chelsea.

The former Manchester City forward arrived at a club lacking direction, but he will still have been disappointed with a return of six goals and three assists.

Sterling looked sharp against Liverpool, however, as he linked up well with striker Nicolas Jackson and right wing-back Reece James.

A versatile, intelligent attacker with an abundance of Premier League experience, the 28-year-old could be a key player for Pochettino’s team this term.

Sterling looks set to continue on the right flank here and he should have some joy up against former Chelsea left-back Emerson Palmieri, who is better going forward than he is defensively.
