Westport crowned Connacht champions

Westport have won the Connacht Junior Rugby Cup after a dramatic finish to today's final against Cregg's in the Sportsground.

Our reporter at the game, Michael Gallagher of the Mayo News, described it as the best Junior Cup final in living memory.

Creggs were bidding for a first title in thirty years, but Westport had other ideas.

Teenage full back Cormac Lyons stretched over under the posts to crush Creggs hearts in the dying stages, with Sam Walsh kicking the conversion just before the final whistle.

Stephen Loftus got over early on, before Creggs played their way into the game with Brian Donoghue and Ronan Dowd turning the tie around.

Creggs were rewarded with a 12-7 lead at half time.

Two minutes into the restart, Ross Burke scored to put Westport two ahead.

Creggs hit back late on with out half Shane Purcell before kicking his side five points clear with minutes remaining.

Westport went on one last attack in hunt of victory and the rest, as they say, is history.
