Classic-winning and winner-producing dams adorn the catalogue for the 2023 Nutrien Equine Melbourne Yearling Sale to be held at Oaklands Junction on April 1, 2 and 3.

A mouth-watering line-up of 304 lots with dam side pedigrees representative of some of the best maternal families in Australia, New Zealand, North America and Europe will go under the hammer at the Inglis Sales Complex.

One of the features of the sale is the progeny of no fewer than 39 Group winners, including 22 Group 1s.

Among the Group 1 mares listed in the catalogue are nine Vicbred champions in Speak No Evil, Hexham Heartbeat, I’m Smouldering, Without You, Claudy’s Princess, Reina Danzante, Kinvara Sue, Betty Hall and Aldebaran Eve.

There’s three Queen of the Pacific winners in Life Inthefastlane, Nike Franco NZ and Speak No Evil, three Oaks winners in Saved A Corka, Nike Franco NZ and Claudy’s Princess, three NSW Breeders Challenge winners in Bamako Mali, Heavens Trend and Married To The Mob, the Breeders Crown champions Speak No Evil, Val Gardena, Aldebaran Ay M and Reina Danzante, the NSW Ladyship Mile and Victoria Ladyship Cup victor Carlas Pixel, the Bathurst Gold Tiara winner Aussie Made Lombo, the NZ Trotting Derby winner Shezoneoftheboyz, the NZ Jewels winner Sunny Ruby and the millionairess Miss Galvinator.

Other Group-winning mares with progeny at the sale include the Edgar Tatlow winners The Good Times and Fususi, Beach Shack, Bettor Downunder, Starburst Girl, Zenable, I Am Special, Aleppo Jewel, Cyclone Jeter NZ, Regal Pepperell, Destinee Jenilou Fr, Jumanji Franco NZ and Egee Money Fr.

The dams represented in the catalogue have produced 65 Group winners, of which 32 were successful at Group 1 level including nine Breeders Crown and eight Vicbred champions.

The list includes superstar pacers Ride High and Poster Boy, the triple Oaks winner Shez All Rock, 2YO Colt of the Year The Storm Inside, the Derby winners Act Now and Elite Stride, Oaks winners in Enchanted Stride, Pretty Majestic and Nomi Malone, the NZ Cup hero Cruz Bromac, the Auckland Cup winner Turn It Up and other age classic winners including Yankee Rockstar, Soho Almasi, School Captain, Beyond Delight, Catalpa Rescue, Rocknroll Magic, Irish Black Label, Focus Stride, Smooth Showgirl, Treasure and the trotters El Jaykay Phoenix, Ofortuna, Elusive Charm, Banglez, Cruisin Around and Kinvara Sue.

Sales graduates are eligible for the Nutrien Equine Sales Classics, with guaranteed $175,000 finals for two-year-old pacing colts/geldings and fillies, $100,000 finals for three-year-old pacing colts/geldings and fillies, $62,500 finals for two-year-old trotting colts/geldings and fillies and $125,000 finals for three-year-old trotting colts/geldings and fillies.

They are also eligible for Vicbred, Vicbred Platinum, Breeders Crown, NSW Breeders Challenge, Bathurst Gold Crown, QBred, Southern Cross, Tasbred and Need For Speed.

  • The Victorian bred Abouttime (Art Major-Limerick Star NZ) became the 100 Australian bred 1:50 performer when he won in 1:49.3 at Menangle last Saturday. The gelding was bred by Bill and Anne Anderson’s Lauriston Bloodstock.
  • Well known Bendigo identity Dr Tony Britt is the recipient of the Ian Daff Memorial Trophy for tenured service to the breeding industry by Harness Breeders Victoria. A past president and long-standing committeeman of HBV, Tony has provided extensive consultative input in the areas of welfare, biosecurity and traceability and has been an advocate for sensible and efficient breeding outcomes.
  • Sermon, a younger full brother to the deceased USA import Aldebaran Eagle, won the $30,000 New Holland Trotting Series in 1:53.4 at Woodbine Mohawk Park, Ontario recently. He has now earned almost $280,000. Aldebaran Eagle, the sire of last year’s 2YO Trotting Filly of the Year Rockinwithattitude, has five lots (3 colts and 2 fillies) in the Nutrien Equine Melbourne Yearling Sale.
