Southampton and Newcastle will battle it out for a place in the Carabao Cup final over two legs with St Mary's playing host to the first encounter between the sides

Newcastle are bidding to reach their first final in 24 years

Newcastle have the opportunity to reach their first cup final in over 20 years when they take on Southampton in the Carabao Cup semi-finals.

The Magpies were last in contention for a domestic prize back in 1999 when they lost the FA Cup final to Manchester United on their Red Devils' way to completing an illustrious treble. It's been a difficult and bumpy road since but there is hope on the horizon under Eddie Howe's new regime, backed by the club's ambitious owners.

Standing in their way of a date at Wembley, however, are Southampton, who have reached the League Cup final twice this side of the Millennium and whose current crop have already upset the odds in the competition this season. Nathan Jones masterminded his team to victory in the last round by dumping out favourites Manchester City.

Here is all you need to know about the match.

Team news

There are no new injury concerns for Southampton who are without long-term absentees Juan Larios and Valentino Livramento.

Theo Walcott may be in contention having not featured since the win over Lincoln before Christmas, while Alex McCarthy and Armel Bella-Kotchap may also return to the squad.

For Newcastle, Jonjo Shelvey, Emil Krafth and Matt Targett are still no closer to a return, but Howe will have the rest of his squad available barring any last-minute issues.
