Southampton travel to Newcastle United for the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final on Tuesday (kick-off, 8pm) needing to overturn a 1-0 deficit after their loss at St Mary’s last week.

The Saints bounced back with a 2-1 win over Championship strugglers Blackpool in the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday but will be the underdogs at St James’ Park.

Newcastle will be confident of reaching the final at Wembley on February 25, and if they get through they will be hoping to win their first major piece of domestic silverware in 68 years.

Pope to deny Saints

Newcastle United’s success this season has been built on their solid defence and the Carabao Cup presents an opportunity to win something to show for their improvement.

Eddie Howe’s side go into the game against Southampton with a 1-0 advantage but that does not mean they will sit back against Southampton, who visit St James’ Park for the first time since Newcastle’s Saudi-backed takeover.

Nick Pope has kept a clean sheet in each of his last 10 games across all competitions, the longest run of a Premier League goalkeeper since Opta records began. (Source: BBC)

The Magpies have not lost a home game since April 2022 and should be fired up to beat the Saints and be the first team in this season’s Carabao Cup final.

Isak to make impact

Injuries have limited Alexander Isak’s minutes this season but that has not stopped Newcastle United’s record signing from showing his quality.

The 23-year-old has found the net three times in eight games across all competitions this season and averages a goal every 121 minutes. (Source: transfermarkt)

Against Southampton last week he provided the assist for Joleinton’s vital goal and he'll be hoping to get on the scoresheet himself this time out.

Carabao Cup semi-finals tend to be low-scoring affairs with Manchester United’s 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest last week the first time one had produced more than 2.5 goals since the 2019-20 campaign.

With Newcastle not having to go all out to win and Southampton offering little going forward, we have gone for Isak to score and under 2.5 goals in the game.

Tip: Alexander Isak to score and under 2.5 goals @ 3/1 with Ladbrokes

Almiron looking to refind form

Mgiel Almiron was Newcastle’s star man earlier this season when he went on a run that brought him seven goals in seven games but he has only found the net once in 11 domestic matches since.

It is not for a lack of effort with the 28-year-old registering nine shots, including three on target, in his last four appearances across all competitions.

A home game against a struggling Southampton side who need to chase the game is the perfect opportunity for Almiron to find some confidence.

Ladbrokes have applied an excellent price boost to this selection so the odds for the attacker to have two or more shots on target are now 23/10 and look too good to turn down.

Tip: Miguel Almiron to have 2+ shots on target @ 23/10 with Ladbrokes
