What is Rory McIlroy's Ryder Cup record? Superstar hopes to lead Team Europe to glory in 2023

Rory McIlroy is without doubt one of the world's best golfers but his personal record at the Ryder Cup is relatively sketchy.

The Northern Irish superstar is one of the players who is going to have to be at the top of their game if Team Europe are to reclaim the title from Team USA in Rome this weekend.

Europe were demolished by a score of 19-9 at 2021's Ryder Cup, but they will hope things can be different in Italy.

But for that to happen, McIlroy will need to be at his best.

What is Rory McIlroy's Ryder Cup record?

McIlroy has had a strange relationship with the Ryder Cup, starting in 2009 when he was interviewed at the Irish Open about it.

As a young and inexperienced golfer, he uttered some sentences that have followed him around to this day.

He said: "It's an exhibition at the end of the day. In the big scheme of things, it's not that important of an event for me.

"Obviously, I'll try my best for the team, but I'm not going to be running around fist-pumping."

Since then, the 34-year-old has played in every tournament from 2010.

As part of Team Europe, he has four wins from six.

And as an individual, he has 12 wins, 12 defeats and four draws, claiming 14 points.

Rory McIlroy's Ryder Cup record

Team wins: 4

Played: 24 matches

Won: 12

Lost: 12

Drawn: 4

Fourballs: 4-5-2

Foursomes: 5-5-1

Singles: 3-2-1

So despite being such an excellent player, you could argue that a 50 per cent win ratio isn't outstanding.

And he will have a lot of pressure on his shoulders to deliver at this year's event.

However, McIlroy is determined to lead by example and has been trusted by Team Europe captain Luke Donald to do just that.

He said: "He doesn't expect me to stand up there and make big speeches or say a lot of things.

"As Luke said, [I can] lead with my clubs, making birdies and getting blue on the board.

"If I can lead by example and be the first one to the team room if there is a meeting, first one on the bus on the way to the course.

"Anything like that where I'm still doing all the things that you should do and not getting complacent, that's the way I would like to lead."

McIlroy appears to be absorbing all of the pressure and preparing himself for what could be a career-defining Ryder Cup.

And vice-captain Thomas Bjorn expects McIlroy and Jon Rahm to take on prominent roles.

Speaking to Betway, he said: Jon [Rahm] and Rory [McIlroy] are different people with different characters.

"They're both amazing with the young guys - their doors are always open. They do, however, need to focus on their own game and balance things out.

"The senior players need to do a bit of both. That’s what it means to be a leader."
