What next for Tobias Foss? TT champion stuck between grand tour ambitions and team strength

The newly-rainbowed time trial champion is stuck between grand tour ambitions and a Jumbo-Visma roster capable of trampling down the three-week season.

Tobias Foss is the new world champion in time trial. He is considering a grand tour but is more interested in winning short stage races. Foss wants to be a team leader but he is not sure if he can do that. He wants a captaincy slot with Jumbo-Visma but there are many good leaders in the team.

Tobias Foss is a TT champion and a grand tour target. He finished ninth at last year's Giro. His return to the race for pink was derailed by a heavy head injury and training fatigue. Jumbo-Visma manager Merijn Zeeman says that the 55km of time trialing for this year’s GIRO will not be enough for Foss to see his dream grand touring result.

Foss wants to focus on stage racing and domestique roles in his final contract with Jumbo-Visma. He is still only 25 and has a decade of racing in front of him. Jumbomila is one of the best places to win grand tours. Vingegaard, Roglič, and Kelderman are contracted through 2024 or beyond. Foss could struggle to see his own opportunity even in 2024. The team nurtured Vedegaar into the team’s first Tour de France winner and converted Rogliač from a ski jumper to a three-time winner of Vuelta a España. It scouted Foss from the continental ranks and gave him the backing and belief to hit a Giro top-10 and win a world title.
