Primož Roglič still bookies' favourite over Egan Bernal for Tour de France 2020

The Tour de France is here and speculation is rife about who will be the strongest heading into a very unusual edition.

Last year, Egan Bernal became the first Colombian to ever win the Tour and the youngest rider to reach the top step in the post-war era, which also makes him the most junior pro to take home the yellow jersey (introduced in 1919).

But with the Tour de France delayed in 2020 due to the coronavirus and the cycling season completely redesigned, this will be a Tour like no other.

With some surprise results in last year's Tour, the bookmakers have released their predictions for who will win the Tour de France 2020.

There are some unexpected picks for the general classification next year, as Primož Roglič has now overtaken Egan Bernal as the bookies favourite to take the victory.

Jumbo-Visma's Roglič seems a safe option considering his dominant performance in the 2019 Vuelta a España and his convincing victory over Team Ineos at the Tour de l'Ain this year.

Roglič was previously second favourite at currently at 5/2, while Bernal was expected to take the win with odds of 9/4.

But after an explosive edition of the Critérium du Dauphiné, the order of favourites has changed with Roglič now the favourite with odds of 9/4, while Bernal slips to 11/4.

Roglič emerged as the strongest rider in the Dauphiné and looked nailed on to win the race as Egan Bernal withdrew after stage three due to a back injury.

But Roglič was then forced out of the race himself after stage four, throwing the doors wide open for the Dauphiné.

Tom Dumoulin, now racing in Jumbo-Visma colours, has been bumped up the rankings to third favourite for the Tour at 15/2, with Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ), who won over plenty of fans with his courageous racing in last year's Tour and his heartbreaking abandonment due to injury in the final week, on 8/1.

Richard Carapaz has suddenly emerged amongst the favourite, after rumours began to circulate that the Ecuadorian could ride the Tour. Team Ineos then announced  that Carapaz would be stepping into the Tour team, while both Geraint Thomas and Chris Froome would be left at home. Carapaz is currently at 14/1 to win the Tour.

Young star Tadej Pogačar is a hot pick for the bookies, as the 21-year-old is at 14/1 after his strong podium in last year's Vuelta a España.

Other notable mentions according to the bookies include Deceuninck - Quick-Step's Julian Alaphilippe (28/1) who was the star rider of last year's Tour and a resurgent Nairo Quintana (Arkéa-Samsic) who is currently also 28/1 to win.
