A rivalry first contested in 1871 is renewed once more 153 years on, as Scotland host their auld enemy England at Murrayfield in a Six Nations grudge match that's shaping up to be a must-win fixture for both sides. Scotland have held the Calcutta Cup for five of the past six years, but a shaky start to this season's championship leaves them in serious jeopardy of losing it.

Last season's opening-weekend fixture at Twickenham was a classic, with Duhan van der Merwe's brace of tries earning Scotland a 29-23 victory in spectacular fashion. Later in the year, Scotland failed to progress from the Rugby World Cup's group of death, while England recovered from a shaky Six Nations campaign to reach the semifinals and ultimately finish third in France.

We're two rounds into the 2024 edition of the Six Nations, and while England have ground out victories against both Italy and Wales so far, Scotland's exuberant playing style has had mixed results — sneaking home despite almost surrendering a 27-point lead against Wales, before losing 20-16 to France at the death last weekend having been ahead for most of the match.

These two historic foes face off once more with the Calcutta Cup at stake and barely anything to split them in terms of recent form. It's shaping up to be another sensational clash between the auld enemies, and The Sporting News has all your TV and streaming info to make sure you don't miss a second of the action!

Ben White and Duhan van der Merwe both starred in Scotland's epic victory at Twickenham 12 months ago, and feature in a star-studded backline that will be led around the pitch by enigmatic fly-half Finn Russell. Fullback Blair Kinghorn and winger Kyle Steyn both come into the lineup at the back, and last year's captain Jamie Ritchie completes a trio of changes at blindside flanker.

Scotland starting XV: Blair Kinghorn, Kyle Steyn, Huw Jones, Sione Tuipulotu, Duhan van der Merwe, Finn Russell, Ben White; Pierre Schoeman, George Turner, Zander Fagerson, Grant Cilchrist, Scott Cummings, Jamie Ritchie, Rory Darge, Jack Dempsey.

Scotland replacements: Ewan Ashman, Alec Hepburn, Elliot Millar-Mills, Sam Skinner, Andy Christie, George Horne, Ben Healy, Cameron Redpath.

Steve Borthwick has made five changes of his own ahead of the showdown in Edinburgh, with 37-year-old Danny Care replacing the injured Alex Mitchell at scrum-half. Ollie Lawrence comes in for Fraser Dingwall despite the inside centre scoring the winning try against Wales, while George Furbank, Ellis Genge and Dan Cole all slot into a side looking for their first Calcutta Cup victory since 2020.

Scotland vs England prediction

Scotland have ridden their luck in the opening two rounds of this year's Six Nations, getting away with a woeful second half against Wales before being made to pay by France last weekend. Their late reversal against France, made all the more frustrating by Sam Skinner's disallowed try, will no doubt spur Scotland into a response against their biggest rivals.

However, while England have been far from world-class in their two closely-fought victories so far, their game management has been much stronger than we've seen from Scotland in the opening weeks. It's certainly going to be a tight match, as is often the case between these two, but if England can prevent their auld enemy from making a fast start at Murrayfield, they might just be able to take advantage towards the back end of the contest.

Prediction: England to win by five points or less
