With victory over Vietnam in the books and their Women's World Cup journey officially under way, the No. 1 ranked USWNT now turn to a much stiffer opponent as they match up against the Netherlands in Group E play.

Ranked ninth in the world, the Dutch picked up three points in their opener as well, topping Portugal 1-0 as they protected an early goal. The Oranje are loaded with top European-based talent and it will present a tough test for the United States who have their eyes set on a historic third straight World Cup title.

One only need to look four years back to realize just how high-powered this matchup is, as these two teams met in the 2019 Women's World Cup final in France. The U.S. lifted the trophy after winning 2-0, with many of this year's Dutch squad present for that defeat.

This time around, questions remain in attack for both these teams. The United States underwhelmed against Vietnam, creating loads of chances but failing to finish many of them off. The Netherlands, meanwhile, are still working star Lieke Martens back to her old self after years of injury troubles, and have few true stars who can help fill those attacking shoes.

The potential return of Rose Lavelle should aid that quest for the USA as they aim ever higher in this competition, but this match will still be won in the defensive and midfield areas of the pitch, as two possessionally dominant sides go toe to toe.

What time does USA vs Netherlands kick off?

This 2023 Women's World Cup Group E match at Wellington Regional Stadium kicks off locally on July 27 at 1 p.m. local time in New Zealand.

Here's how that time translates across some of the major territories around the globe:

USA vs Netherlands projected lineups & team news

USA head coach Vlatko Andonovski made two tweaks to his strongest lineup against Vietnam, with Rose Lavelle coming off the bench and Julie Ertz slotted into central defense. Here against the strongest group opponent they'll face, we'll see the strongest possible XI for the United States and the one we're likely to see moving forward through the tournament.

As far as those two players are concerned, Ertz should move into midfield as Alana Cook enters to partner with Naomi Girma at the back.

Lavelle, meanwhile, played 30 minutes against Vietnam, a very positive sign for her as she returns to full fitness from a knee injury. It remains to be seen whether she'll be fit for a start here, but it's likely she could go at least an hour.

USA projected starting lineup (4-3-3): Naeher (GK) — Dunn, Girma, Cook, Fox — Horan, Ertz, Lavelle — Smith, Morgan, Rodman.

The Dutch deployed a first-choice starting lineup against Portugal in their group stage opener, but seeing as they have one day fewer to recover than their opponents, some changes could be necessary.

The Netherlands are loaded in central defense, meaning head coach Andries Jonker could elect to bring on Aniek Nouwen if he wishes to give one of his regulars a rest, or sees a tactical tweak to make. Exciting up-and-coming 19-year-old Esmee Brugts started at wing-back against Portugal, but is possible that Jonker could turn to a more experienced player like full-back Kerstin Casparij for that spot, giving them a bit more defensive solidity against such a strong USA forward group.

Up front, Katja Snoeijs could enter if needed, but it's more likely that the established strike duo of Lieke Martens and Lineth Beerensteyn stay put.

Netherlands projected starting lineup (3-1-4-2): van Domselaar (GK) — Spitse, van der Gragt, Janssen — Roord — Pelova, Groenen, van de Donk, Casparij — Beerensteyn, Martens.

USA vs Netherlands betting odds & lines

As overall top tournament favorites and ranked number one in the world by FIFA, the United States are understandably going to be favorites in nearly all single matches throughout this tournament – unless they are devastated by injuries or put together a string of poor performances.

They are indeed favorites here, but not nearly to the level we've seen them labeled as of late, owing to the strength of the Netherlands. With the outcome of this heavyweight battle expected to put forth the likely group winner, the two sides are considered to have a chance at securing all three points.

Goals are thought to be at a premium here, as both teams earned shutout victories in their opening matches, and neither unleashed an onslaught of goals up front.
