Wimbledon Betting Guide: Friday 7/7/23

Perhaps the most revered of the four Grand Slams, Wimbledon has gotten underway this week. What better way to get in on the action than by making some wagers on the tennis odds at FanDuel Sportsbook?

The action continues on Friday morning. Which matchups offer the most value on Day 5?

Cameron Norrie vs. Christopher Eubanks

Christopher Eubanks Moneyline (+280)

It's been hard to find fun underdogs to back in the early rounds thus far, but we could have an upset special brewing in this match.

On paper, Cameron Norrie should be able to take care of business as the far more established player. He's the World No. 13, reached the semifinals of last year's Wimbledon, and as a British player, he'll have the crowd firmly behind him.

Meanwhile, Christopher Eubanks is coming off his first-ever main draw win at this tournament, and he's never made it past the second round of a Grand Slam despite being 27 years old -- the same age as Norrie. In 2023, he's achieved just a 12-10 record, whereas Norrie has over double the wins at 31-12.

So, why should we have any faith in Eubanks? Well, it just so happens that he may be going through the best stretch of his career.

Prior to Wimbledon, Eubanks won five of seven ATP-level grass matches, and if we include qualifying and Challenger matches, he went 10-3 in June. But what's most notable is that the American earned his first career title, taking home the trophy at Mallorca, helping him crack the top 50 in the ATP rankings for the first time.

In contrast, Norrie played just three grass matches before the tournament, bowing out in the quarterfinals at Queen's Club. And while the Brit has established himself as a solid grass player, it's technically his weakest surface when going by career win percentage (55.9%), and it's the one surface where he hasn't won a title.

Eubanks didn't defeat anyone of Norrie's caliber during this recent run on grass, so it could all come crashing down in a hurry, but he's now on a six-match win streak following his first-round win, and that could be a confidence-booster entering Friday.

Going by Tennis Abstract's Elo ratings, Eubanks is projected to have a 33.8% chance of winning. While that might not seem like much, +280 implies only 26.3% odds, so there's potential value in rolling the dice with the American.

Alexander Bublik vs. Maximilian Marterer

Alezander Bublik 3-0 Sets (+115)

For Alexander Bublik, there's little question about which surface is his best.

Over his career, Bublik has a losing record on clay and is a .500 player on hard courts. But when it comes to grass? He's won 65.0% of those matches, and he entered Wimbledon 6-1 on the surface this season. His lone grass loss came against a top-10 player in Jannik Sinner in early June, and then after that, he went on to win the championship at Halle, defeating notable names like Andrey Rublev and Alexander Zverev along the way.

Maximilian Marterer deserves credit for making it through qualifying and then winning two main draw matches. But he's had to expend a lot of energy in some grueling matches to make it this far, and none of his five opponents were ranked inside the top 95. The German is ranked 170th for a reason, as he has a career losing record on all three surfaces.

While even the very best in the sport can drop a set to far lesser opponents, this looks like the right matchup to back Bublik to get the job done in straight sets. Per Tennis Abstract, Bublik wins this match 86.7% of the time, further suggesting that he should be in the driver's seat on Friday.
