The group stage of the Women's World Cup is now done and dusted and we have lost some big hitting nations. Germany, Canada and Brazil will take no further part in the ninth Women's World Cup which has produced more than its fair share of shock results.

Pre-tournament favourites USA escaped a late scare in their last group game when Portugal hit the post late in their goalless draw which could have eliminated the two-time defending champions. knockout stage gets under way on Saturday when Switzerland play Spain before Japan face Norway.

A total of 32 nations have qualified for the World Cup from six different confederations. The 64 matches will be played in 10 stadiums and nine different cities before the final takes place at Stadium Australia in Sydney on Sunday 20 August.

This promises to be the biggest and best World Cup the women's game has ever seen. The leading had USA as favourites to win the tournament for the fifth time and the third in a row. But the Americans are not outright favourites any more as England look to be crowned champions for the first time.

The first Women's World Cup took place in 1991 when China was awarded the inaugural tournament. In a much smaller format, only 26 matches were played before Michelle Akers-Stahl scored twice in the final for team USA in their 2-1 win over Norway.

The tournament has grown and now follows the same format as the men's game with eight groups of four. The top two in each group progress to round of 16, where the winner advances. If needed, extra-time and penalties will decide which team advances in the elimination stage.

The Americans have ruled the Women's World Cup in recent times, lifting the trophy in 2015 and backing that win up in 2019. No team has won the competition more than USA, and with one of the best squads assembled, they started the tournament as favourites. But they have not looked great in their group games, beating Vietnam 3-0 before draws with the Netherlands and Portugal who hit the post in the closing stages that could have knocked the Americans out.

The USA entered the World Cup as the number one ranked team in FIFA's world rankings, but will they remain there after this tournament? Sweden are ranked two in the world standings after reaching the semi-finals of Euro 2022, where they were beaten by England.

England went on to win that tournament by beating Germany in the final, and they will hope to fly the flag for Europe Down Under. However, the Lionesses are without several key players from that tournament win, including the retired Jill Scott and the injured Beth Mead, Fran Kirby and skipper Leah Williamson. Three countries ranked in FIFA's top 10 rankings have failed to advance to the Round of 16. Germany join Canada and Brazil in making early exits from a tournament they were expected to do well at.

Sarina Wiegman still has a strong squad to choose from, and England will hope for a repeat of last summer's successful adventure. Like any major football tournament, there will be shock results and surprise teams. With 64 games to be played, there will be plenty of opportunity to make the most of any you might have to use.

Women's World Cup Odds

Since losing the 2011 final to Japan on penalties in Frankfurt, the Americans have been formidable. In the 14 matches they have played in the last two World Cups, team USA have won 13 and drawn one, a goalless draw with Sweden in the group stage in 2015.

Before this tournament, they had won their last 12 World Cup matches by a combined score of 37-5. Included in that aggregate score is the tournament's biggest-ever win when the USA beat Thailand 13-0 four years ago, scoring 10 times in the second half. They haven't looked comfortable in the tournament so far, drawing twice after beating Vietnam in their opening game. Can the two-time defending champion get their tournament back on track?

American legend Carli Lloyd has been critical of the USA team for their performances in the Women's World Cup, which has seen them win just one of their three group matches. Can the US team, including some of her former team-mates silence her and other critics with a win against Sweden?

William Hill Odds

Sweden have been none of the best teams so far, with three wins from three and nine goals scored against one conceded. It will take a very good team to beat the Swedes in this form, and the USA are going to have to play a lot better than they have if they are to be the team to end Sweden's hopes. William Hill is offering 11/2 from 9/2 on Sweden Women to lead the USA at half-time and to win the game.
