Yankees’ Anthony Volpe isn’t a major-league shortstop, scout says

Anthony Volpe is on track to do big things for the New York Yankees soon.

The 21-year-old is the Yankees top prospect, according to MLB Pipeline, and No. 5 prospect overall. He got an invite to spring training and the opportunity to compete for the prize of the starting shortstop title.

Oswald Peraza and Isiah Kiner-Falefa are also in the mix, but according to Dan Martin of the New York Post, one scout thinks that Volpe will end up being a second baseman.

“He’s always reminded me of Dustin Pedroia,” the scout said. “He’s on the small side, like Dustin, yet he hits everything with authority. And he plays the game like he’s on fire, which [Pedroia] did, too.”

Pedroia, a former second baseman, spent his entire 14-year MLB career with the Boston Red Sox. He retired after a knee injury.

Right now at spring training, Volpe is slashing .308/.438/.590 with a 1.027 OPS.
