Yankees’ Jose Trevino reacts to wrist injury

TAMPA — Jose Trevino’s smile lit up the Yankees’ clubhouse on a dreary morning in Tampa on Wednesday. He knew he’d need to address reporters about his wrist injury after wandering to his locker and he didn’t mind.

“I feel really good today,” Trevino said. “I felt like I made a lot of progress in the past couple days. I’m super positive about it, like I feel very confident in it.”

That echoes the unconcerned report from Yankees manager Aaron Boone, who first revealed that Trevino has an issue with his wrist after a 10-3 win over the Blue Jays on Tuesday night. The backstop suffered a right wrist sprain during his first at-bat in Thursday’s loss to the Red Sox, a spring setback that’s held Trevino out of Grapefruit League games ever since.

Trevino confirmed that he’s been dealing with inflammation, only feeling discomfort in the wrist when he swings. He’s unsure exactly when he’ll be able to return to the starting lineup, but plans to start hitting again in the next few days. Boone said on Tuesday night that he expects Trevino to return to in-game action this weekend.

It may only be a minor issue, but Trevino is the latest Yankees catcher to get bitten by the injury bug this spring. Ben Rortvedt (shoulder surgery), Austin Wells (fractured rib) and Josh Breaux (elbow) are all sidelined this month. With backup Kyle Higashioka absent during his trip to the World Baseball Classic, playing for Team USA, the Yankees don’t have any catchers with MLB experience currently at big-league camp.

Asked about his readiness for Opening Day, Trevino didn’t even let the reporter finish his question.

“I feel very confident,” he said.
