Yankees’ Jose Trevino suffers injury

TAMPA — Catcher Jose Trevino is the latest backstop to suffer an injury at Yankees camp this spring.

The All-Star and Platinum Glove Award winner sprained his right wrist while taking a swing in Thursday’s loss to the Red Sox, Yankees manager Aaron Boone revealed after a 10-3 win over the Blue Jays at Steinbrenner Field on Tuesday night.

Trevino, 30, had his wrist imaged, showing some inflammation.

The hope is that this injury shouldn’t impact Trevino’s readiness for Opening Day. Boone explained that Trevino should be able to return to the starting lineup this weekend.

“As soon as he’s got nothing in there, then he’ll start hitting again,” Boone said. “It should probably only be a couple more days.”

Trevino is hitting .267 (4-for-15) over seven Grapefruit League games.

Yankees catchers have been dropping like flies over the last few weeks. Triple-A starter Ben Rortvedt is out for the rest of this month after surgery to address an aneurysm in his left shoulder that was impacting circulation in his hand. Josh Breaux, another catcher that would’ve been headed to Triple-A, has an elbow injury and won’t throw for the next few weeks. Prospect Austin Wells, who projected to start in Double-A, recently suffered a fractured rib and won’t be ready to begin the regular season either.

Big-league backup Kyle Higashioka is also unavailable, currently suiting up for the United States in the World Baseball Classic.

Factoring in all of those injuries, and Higashioka’s trip to the WBC, there are no catchers with big-league experience left at Yankees camp. Non-roster invitees Rodolfo Durán and Carlos Narvaez are the only other backstops at major-league camp. Former prospect Anthony Seigler was reassigned to minor-league camp earlier this month. Nick Ciuffo is also at minor-league camp, a former first-rounder that’s played in 21 MLB games with the Rays and Orioles.
