Yankees surprise hire to help in many roles: 3 takeaways

Brian Sabean is joining the Yankees as an executive assistant to general manager Brian Cashman. Saben helped the Giants win three World Series titles in the 2010s. His contract with the team expired on October 31.

Sabean was the Giants' general manager from 1996 until 2018. Farhan Zaidi took over as the general generalmanager in 2018, moving Sabean into a front office role.

Sabean got his start in professional baseball with the Yankees in 1985 as a scout. He left for the Giants in 1993. Sabean helped draft and develop the Core Four and Bernie Williams. In 2018, Cashman said that Sabenen contributed to the New York Yankees' dynasty as much as anybody through his scouting and administration.

Sabean is a new employee of the Yankees. He will help in many roles. One of his first tasks will be to do a deep dive on the roster and rewatch all the playoff games. Sabean doesn't know how far the team is going to go to the World Series.
