Here are the projected starters for each team Sunday:

New York Yankees Projected Starter:

  • Domingo German - RHP - 3-3, 54.1 IP, 3.98 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, 53 K

Los Angeles Dodgers Projected Starter:

  • Bobby Miller - RHP - 2-0, 11.0 IP, 1.64 ERA, 0.91 WHIP, 9 K

Entering the rubber match of this interleague series, both teams have been playing at a similar level. Sunday’s matchup will feature two very capable starting pitchers in Domingo German and Bobby Miller. German has been a bright spot in the Yankees’ rotation, though he struggled last time out. In his last start, he surrendered four earned runs on seven hits and three walks over 6.1 IP, though he managed to snag the win over Seattle.

While German’s season-long line is solid, he’s been marred by inconsistency throughout the year. He’s also been subject to some controversy surrounding his utilization of sticky substances on the mound, which led to his ejection two starts ago. It’s easy to chalk his poor outing up to increased scrutiny following that outing, so it’s reasonable to wonder if German is actually using some sort of substance to gain an advantage. After all, his 0.98 WHIP is significantly better than any mark he’s posted in his major league career. With this in mind, it’s reasonable to be skeptical of German’s performance against a solid Dodgers lineup.

On the other hand, Bobby Miller is a first-year rookie who is just 24 years old; still, despite his youth, he’s been outstanding since receiving his first cup of coffee with the big club. In both of his two starts so far, he’s gone at least 5.0 innings, surrendered no more than four hits, allowed one earned run or fewer, walked one or fewer and struck out at least four. While rookie pitchers are always a mixed bag, Miller’s low walk rate throughout his career should bode well for a repeat performance.

With the sticky stuff situation, we’d say the Dodgers have an advantage on the mound, especially considering the bullpen woes the Yankees have suffered. Further, Los Angeles has a clear advantage at the plate. Against right-handers, the Dodgers have posted a combined .792 OPS, good enough for second in baseball. The Yankees haven’t been bad, posting a thirteenth-best .733, but they’ve been closer to the middle of the pack than the top of it.

Combined, we like the Dodgers’ chances of winning this Sunday Night Baseball matchup. Currently, their money line odds are listed at (-150) on DraftKings, which we think provides a fair bit of value for bettors; however, we wouldn’t blame you for springing for the -1.5 (+125) line instead.

Another of our Yankees vs. Dodgers best bets involves veteran slugger J.D. Martinez’ total bases prop, currently set at 1.5 (+120) on DraftKings Sportsbook. Martinez has been excellent throughout the season, showcasing his trademark power-average combination; however, he’s been even more deadly against right-handed pitching than usual.

Through 128 at-bats against RHP, Martinez has posted a .305/.321/.680 triple-slash for a 1.001 OPS, adding 11 HR, 11 doubles and two triples. German has been solid this season, but his effectiveness is in question following his sticky stuff outing and subsequent four earned run showing. Expect Martinez to barrel at least one ball up, hopefully surpassing his plus-money 1.5 total bases prop with a single swing. Martinez has both the per at-bat power and average ability to rack up multiple hits or an extra-base hit, making this line one of our favorite Yankees vs. Dodgers best bets for value-minded bettors.
