Yankees vs Orioles Odds, Lines & Picks (July 28)

You could have made a lot of money prior to the season starting if you’d bet the Orioles (62-40, 30-20 home) would be eight games better than the Yankees (54-48, 22-24 away) 100+ games into the season.

Unfortunately, that market was not offered by online sportsbooks. Nevertheless, there’s been no doubt who’s been the superior club in 2023.

Baltimore enters its three game series with New York this weekend in first place in the AL East, while the Bronx Bombers currently occupy the division cellar. Despite the win discrepancy between the two, it’s New York who opened as the chalk in Friday’s MLB odds.

New York vs Baltimore Starting Pitchers

There’s a very clear reason why New York is favored on Friday and his name is Gerrit Cole. The AL Cy Young odds favorite has been phenomenal over the past two months, yielding two runs or less in seven of his past nine starts.

He’s fresh off back-to-back double-digit strikeout performances, most recently fanning 10 Royals in a 5-2 Yankees victory. The $300 million man has shut down high powered lineups like the Rangers, Mets, Red Sox and Dodgers over the last eight weeks, but doesn’t exactly have a sparkling track record against Baltimore.

The O’s tagged him for six hits and five runs in their lone meeting against him this season, and the Baltimore regulars in the MLB starting lineups are one of the few groups in baseball with a decent track record of success versus Cole. They’re slashing .284/.336/.491 versus the righty over 116 at-bats, with 16 extra-base hits.

Cole vs Rodriguez Stats

The Orioles will counter with rookie Grayson Rodriguez. The 23-year-old has had an inconsistent start to his MLB tenure, but after six straight starts versus some of the best lineups in baseball (Rays x2, Dodgers, Rangers, Blue Jays, and Angels) he’ll get a break against the anemic New York bats.

Rodriguez’s main issue this season has been his control. He’s been extremely prone to walks and home runs, yielding 11 dingers over a five start stretch in June. The righty hasn’t allowed a homer now in back-to-back starts however, and has a 10-to-4 strikeout-to-walk rate over his last 10 innings.

Yankees vs Orioles Predictions

Baltimore also owns MLB’s top bullpen per various metrics, so even if Rodriguez does get into trouble the O’s relievers can bail him out.

The Yankee bats have scored the second fewest runs since Aaron Judge was injured June 3rd, but the team is expecting to activate him in time for Friday’s contest.

That should be music to New York fans ears, as Judge’s teammates have been in a funk without him. They’re slashing .220/.296/.363 over the last eight weeks, getting very little production out of big names like Giancarlo Stanton, Anthony Rizzo and DJ LeMahieu.

Baltimore on the other hand, hasn’t been experiencing the same types of issues. The O’s have won 13 of 18, while averaging over five runs per game during that stretch. Gunnar Henderson has been leading the way with a .552 slugging percentage and .890 OPS, smacking five home runs and scoring 15 times during Baltimore’s run.

Yankees vs Orioles 2023 H2H Results

The Orioles have also been getting plenty of production from Anthony Santander, Adley Rutschman and Austin Hays, the ladder of which is hitting .333 lifetime against Cole.

Another Baltimore bat to look out for on Friday is Adam Frazier. He’s a career .455 hitter versus Cole over 11 at-bats, with a 1.000 OPS.
