The Washington Nationals are giving Mike Rizzo a chance to finish what he started as the team’s longtime president of baseball operations and general manager. The club has signed Rizzo to a multiyear extension. The deal comes with Rizzo — who put together the roster that won the 2019 World Series — overseeing a top-to-bottom rebuild that he believes is nearing completion. Details were not released, but the 62-year-old Rizzo said he plans to remain in Washington for “a long, long time.”

Here's more proof of how fast legal sports betting is spreading in the U.S. A company that most of the industry uses to verify that its customers are where they say they are reports a record number of transactions over the first weekend of the NFL season. GeoComply Solutions says it recorded over 242 million geolocation transactions from customers of legal U.S. sportsbooks, up 56% increase from last year. The data records the amount of times the company was called on to verify a customer’s location. It's considered a good indicator for at least a minimum level of sports betting activity, more than 80% of which is done online.

The 12 members of Europe’s Ryder Cup team will know each other pretty well by the end of this week’s BMW PGA Championship. The chosen dozen are fresh off a short trip to Rome to play the course at the Marco Simone club and bond as a team over dinner. They have been placed together across four groups for the first two rounds at Wentworth. The BMW PGA Championship is often described as the flagship event on the European tour. This year's tournament is pretty much doubling as extended Ryder Cup prep. Shane Lowry has been so busy these past few days that he said he nearly forgot he was coming to Wentworth to defend his title.

Hundreds of Milwaukee bar patrons who hoped to score free drinks through its offer to pay their tabs whenever the New York Jets, and former Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, lose had to pay up after the Jets got an overtime win despite an injury that took Rodgers out of the game. During Monday’s game between the Buffalo Bills and the Jets, many fans at Jack’s American Pub cheered when the injured Rodgers left in the first quarter, only to have their free drink hopes dashed by the Jets' 22-16 overtime win. Bar manager Olivia Fallon tells WDJT-TV about 350 patrons took up its “Jets Lose, You Win” deal offer Monday night. The bar's owner says the establishment still wants to do a promotion related to the Jets, but hasn't determined what that will be.

Rugby World Cup organizers have apologized again to fans who missed the start of matches in Marseille and Bordeaux last weekend. The organizers also didn’t believe the refereeing on head injuries has been inconsistent. They pointed jubilantly to the record number of fans who congregated to watch the first eight games in France. Tournament director Michel Poussau says "the eight matches have gathered 700,000 fans, 430,000 in the stadiums where the attendances have been remarkable, and the rest in rugby villages.” Not all of them got to watch the whole game. Crowd access problems in Marseille and Bordeaux were a bad look for the tournament and France a year after the Champions League final catastrophe in Paris and a year before the Olympic Games are hosted in Paris.

Louis Bielle-Biarrey will become France’s youngest player to feature at a Rugby World Cup when the hosts play Uruguay in their second pool game on Thursday in Lille. The winger’s meteoric rise earned him a spot in the World Cup squad this summer. Now, it’s a starting role, at 20 years, 87 days. Bielle-Biarrey would normally be busy at this time with university tests. He's trying to juggle a degree in business management with the demands of France's rugby team. Rugby is winning out. His country needs him, and Bielle-Biarrey says he wants to finish what he's started.

France’s top financial prosecutor says that investigations into the organization of the 2024 Paris Olympics have not revealed any serious corruption or influence peddling. Jean-Francois Bohnert says the potential infractions currently investigated by the the financial prosecutor’s office are “mainly formal.” He says “it’s about favoritism, of illegal interest-taking. ... I don’t see any elements that would lead us in the investigation towards the most serious cases of corruption or influence peddling.” French police searched the Paris Olympic organizing committee headquarters in June as part of corruption investigations into contracts linked to the event.

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan State has stumbled from scandal to scandal, including the sexual abuse attacks by sports doctor Larry Nassar. After a female Michigan State graduate filed a complaint about Nassar’s abuse in 2014, a school investigation said he didn’t violate school policy…

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Arizona State took a calculated risk in hiring the youngest head coach in a Power Five conference. Thirty-three-year-old Kenny Dillingham had a solid record as an assistant coach and offensive coordinator, yet had never been a head coach on any level. In the past, Dilling…

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Florida ended a four-game losing streak last week and now has a chance to end another slide. This one might be more important. The Gators have dropped four consecutive rivalry games. They went 0-4 against Tennessee, LSU, Georgia and Florida State in coach Billy Napie…

The Serbian player who needed a kidney removed during the Basketball World Cup has been discharged from a Philippines hospital and was able to join his team for its silver-medal celebration in Belgrade. Borisa Simanic told Radio Belgrade that he must rest for three months and then the process of determining whether he can play basketball again will begin. Doctors who treated Simanic in Manila believe it is possible that the 25-year-old forward can resume his career. Serbia lost the gold-medal game to Germany.

Jude Bellingham is already proving that he has what it takes to help fill the gigantic void left by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Bellingham has become one of the elite players in Europe alongside the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland and Vinicius Jr. The 20-year-old England midfielder added another goal to the five he has scored in four games this season for Real Madrid. The 3-1 win over Scotland on Tuesday in Glasgow was only a friendly but Bellingham also set up another for Harry Kane. Former Liverpool great Graeme Souness says “Jude Bellingham is the real deal.”

Jets QB Aaron Rodgers has a torn left Achilles tendon and will miss the rest of the season

The start of the season has gone exactly as planned for No. 22 Miami. Two games, two wins, one loss from last season avenged and the Hurricanes are back in the AP Top 25 as well. They don’t seem to care about any of this. Miami coach Mario Cristobal used to work for Alabama coach Nick Saban, who famously refers to praise from the outside world as “rat poison.” Cristobal didn’t use that phrase, but sure sounded like his old boss when talking about how the Hurricanes would be wise to not read too much into the newfound positive hype when they play host to Bethune-Cookman on Thursday.

No. 8 Washington’s visit to Michigan State would have been one of the closely watched intersectional games Saturday even without the latest scandal in East Lansing. Harlon Barnett took over as Michigan State’s acting coach this week following Mel Tucker’s suspension without pay in the wake of allegations he sexually harassed activist and rape survivor Brenda Tracy. No. 11 Tennessee visits Florida for a rivalry game that is among Week 3's featured matchups. Texas' Quinn Ewers is moving up the Heisman Trophy board with Wyoming up next. Texas A&M's Jimbo Fisher is on the hot seat after losing at Miami.

NFL passing games struggled to get off the ground in Week 1. Whether it was because of quarterbacks being rusty from a lack of preseason action, wet weather that impacted several games or improved defense, this was one of the worst opening weekends for passing in years no matter the measurement. Nineteen of the 32 teams failed to reach even 200 yards of net passing offense in their openers, the first time that has happened in any week of the season since Week 3 in 2008. In all, teams combined for just 194.5 net yards passing per game for the lowest total in Week 1 of a season since 2006.

There was much hype before the WNBA season about the stellar teams in Las Vegas and New York. Neither disappointed, finishing 1-2 in the standings with the defending champion Aces having the best record in the league at 34-6. New York was right behind. Now the two begin the postseason with history on the line. A’ja Wilson is hoping to lead Las Vegas to a second straight title, something that hasn’t been done since the Los Angeles Sparks won in 2001 and 2002. AP Player of the Year Breanna Stewart, who came to New York in the offseason as a free agent, hopes to bring the Liberty their first title.

Aaron Rodgers’ season ended after just four snaps. Those realistic Super Bowl dreams turned into another nightmare for long-suffering Jets fans once it became clear Rodgers tore his left Achilles tendon. The road to recovery for players coming off a torn Achilles is long and arduous. If he decides to play, Rodgers would be trying a comeback at age 40. Considering he’s contemplated retirement the past few years, it’s unknown whether the future Hall of Famer will even want to return. Typically, it takes players 9-12 months to recover from surgery for a torn Achilles. Some athletes have returned sooner.

Longtime New York Jets fans are all too familiar with the pain that comes from having a promising season derailed as soon as it started by a quarterback injury. Twenty-four years to the day from when Vinny Testaverde’s ruptured Achilles in the season opener ruined the 1999 season for the Jets, the team announced Tuesday that Aaron Rodgers suffered the same season-ending injury just four plays into his debut with the team. Other teams have had promising seasons derailed by early QB injuries like the 1991 Eagles, 1993 Dolphins, 2003 Falcons and 2008 Patriots.

Pitt quarterback Phil Jurkovec was awful against Cincinnati on Saturday night. He threw more than twice as many incompletions as completed passes. He was the No. 1 reason, among many, why Pitt was embarrassed in a 27-21 home loss.

Alex Chiasson may not be the most coveted player in the National Hockey League, but he tends to grow on teams when given the chance.

PITTSBURGH — Don't expect an army of camouflaged hunters to cut through your backyard during a limited archery deer hunt planned for two city parks. Pittsburgh's first citywide deer management plan attempts to reduce unwanted nuisance deer while keeping unwanted hunters off private properties.

Years ago when I lived in Ely and grouse season rolled around, as it will again Saturday, I regularly strolled into the woods toting a Model 12 Winchester.

DULUTH, Minn. — A warm and dry summer may not have been the best thing for your scorched-brown lawn, but it was probably great news for little ruffed grouse chicks and the people who like to hunt them when they get bigger in the fall.

Steve Cohen’s nearly three-year-long pursuit of David Stearns has finally come to an end. Time will tell whether Stearns was worth the wait.

The Cincinnati Reds meet the Detroit Tigers with a 1-0 series lead.

The Los Angeles Dodgers trimmed their magic number for clinching the NL West to five with an 11-2 victory over the San Diego Padres. Freddie Freeman homered, doubled and had four hits on his 34th birthday, and Will Smith hit a three-run homer. Lance Lynn pitched seven sturdy innings of five-hit ball when the Dodgers needed it most, preserving their taxed bullpen. Fernando Tatís Jr. homered for the Padres, who have lost four of six. Michael Wacha took his second consecutive loss after going 6-0 in his previous eight starts for San Diego.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Matt Olson tied the Braves’ season home run record with 51 and Atlanta moved to the cusp of the NL East title, beating the Philadelphia Phillies 7-6 in 10 innings Tuesday night.
