Every so often a horse comes along that, although not the highest rated animal, shows a remarkable temperament and versatility which warms racing fans' hearts toward them. Darasso, now a ten-year-old veteran, certainly fits in that category. Making his debut for Joseph O'Brien all the way back on New Year's Eve 2018, this son of Konig Turf has been on the go pretty much ever since and is a wonderfully consistent performer.

Not many horses will have run in both the Champion Hurdle and Grand National throughout their career, but Darasso did take his chance in the 2 mile Cheltenham showpiece in 2020. He eventually finished a 20 length 10th behind owner-mate Epatante. Since that day he has been used almost as a jack of all trades by O'Brien and McManus, running with credit in races over 2 miles over both fences and hurdles while also placing in 3 mile contests in both disciplines.

In his career so far the nearest miss in a big race was his half length second in the 2022 Galway Plate behind Hewick. Checking through Darasso's record there are a host of brilliant efforts in defeat behind stars such as that one and even the recently retired wondermare Honeysuckle. There hasn't ever really been a day he has looked to be crying out for this mammoth test, and it wouldn't be a surprise to see him run well for a while before pulling up.

However, stranger things have happened in racing and one thing Darasso certainly won't be lacking is heart if he is still in contention as the race draws to its conclusion.
