Lightning Favored Over Flyers

The Tampa Bay Lightning need to snap out of the funk they’ve fallen into of late. Fortunately, they have a get-right game against the Philadelphia Flyers at Amalie Arena on Tuesday night. Well, according to the NHL betting markets, at least.

The Lightning are installed as the runaway favorites while the Flyers are the quintessential underdogs for this Eastern Conference showdown between two sides that are heading in opposite directions.

Tampa Bay Reeling

Tampa Bay is 37-21-5 with 79 points from 63 games. The Lightning are third in the Atlantic Division, five points adrift of the Toronto Maple Leafs and 24 points off the record-setting pace of the Boston Bruins.

Recent form is shocking, with the Lightning riding a five-game losing streak and slipping to a subpar 2-5-3 record in the last 10. Nothing seems to be going the way of the Bolts, not even extreme measures such as the coach’s decision to bench the entire top line a couple of nights ago against the Buffalo Sabres.

The Lightning are coming off a 6-0 blowout loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday night. Both the offense and defense were a non-factor as the defending Eastern Conference champions suffered their second six-goal defeat in a month and fifth setback in a row.

Captain Steven Stamkos was uncharacteristically out of sorts, failing to produce a single shot in the game. Victor Hedman left the game with an undisclosed issue, which leaves his status for Tuesday night up in the air. Eric Cernak has missed two games and his return remains uncertain.

Philadelphia Sputtering

Philadelphia is 24-28-11 with 59 points from 63 games. The Flyers are second to last in the Metropolitan Division, 13 points clear of the bottom-placed Columbus Blue Jackets.

Although the Flyers are coming off a victory, their recent form is discouraging, to say the least. The Flyers are 2-6-2 in their last 10 games.

The Flyers are struggling across the board. There’s very little that is redeeming about this team, from the offense that is averaging only 2.62 goals to the defense that is allowing 3.25 goals per game. Heck, even the fans are struggling to get behind them.

That said, the Flyers cruised to a 3-1 victory in their last game. Granted, beating the Detroit Red Wings is hardly a ringing endorsement. Moreover, it marked Philadelphia’s first win in five games. But beggars can’t be choosers, or so the saying goes.

Flyers vs Lightning Head-to-Head

Tampa Bay strikes a convincing pose on the betting online board behind an 8-2-0 record in its last 10 games versus Philadelphia. The Flyers, by contrast, boast a woeful 2-6-2 record against the Lightning during this same stretch.

The Flyers surprised the Lightning and defied the NHL odds in their first meeting on Oct. 18 by taking the narrow 3-2 win in Tampa Bay. Soon thereafter, the Lightning set the record straight with a dominant 4-1 win in Philly on Dec. 1. It marked Tampa Bay’s fourth win in the last five meetings between them.

Flyers vs Lightning Picks and Prediction

Under most circumstances, Tampa Bay would be a total mismatch for Philadelphia in every sense and it would be hard to see anything but a win for the Lightning at Amalie Arena. But Tampa Bay’s struggles could give Philly a sliver of hope to hang on to here.

As per the NHL betting markets, however, Tampa Bay on the moneyline is the smart play (see the odds breakdown below). If there was ever an ideal opportunity for the Bolts, this is the matchup for it. Thus, the puckline offers an interesting alternative for your NHL picks, where the Lightning are juiced to -125 on the 1½ NHL line.

Tampa Bay is listed at -300 in our Vegas NHL lines. So, if you wager $100 on the Lightning, there’s a chance to win $33. Philadelphia is +250, with a chance to win $250 on a $100 wager. The implied probability attached to the betting lines gives Tampa Bay a 75.00% chance to win, with the Flyers at 28.57%.
