On day two of the St Leger Festival, Doncaster’s flagship race meeting, there are some excellent races for both those in attendance and those watching on television to feast their eyes on. We have multiple Group 2 races and a Listed event to get the juices flowing, but it’s the final race on the card, a Class 4 event that really peaks my interest.
The last race on Friday will be the Hippo Clean Edge Masking Tape Confined Nursery, a Class 4 nursery run over six furlongs. 10 runners are due to go to post for this contest, while there’s a tidy £11,596 on offer to the winning connections.

A Class 4 race may not appear to be the most mouthwatering contest on a card containing more than one Group 2 race, not to mention a nice Listed race, but this is a very interesting little race, one that looks plenty competitive if the early betting is anything to go by.
Our best prediction: Kingswood Flyer @ 5/1 (6.00)
The early favourite for this race is Succession, who recently finished second in a similar grade at Wolverhampton. That was a competitive Racing League event, so the form must be respected, though it hasn’t exactly been franked since. At slightly bigger odds, Kingswood Flyer looks to be the best bet here.
Raced four times, this unexposed colt has looked nicely progressive, stepping forward to deliver a career-best effort recently at Newbury, where he ran on well to win in Class 4 company, seemingly enjoying the good-to-soft ground in the process. Prior to that, he finished second at Salisbury, running behind a horse that has since gone on to win a Listed event at Ripon, which is form to be taken seriously in relation to this contest. Given his form and powerful connections, don’t be surprised if the mount of Tom Marquand shortens before the off. I’ll be on at 5/1, that’s for sure.

If you’re looking for something at an each-way price, then That’s For Sure, who goes in the hands of Clifford Lee, for top two-year-old trainer Karl Burke. This horse ran well on debut at Hamilton, before running on powerfully to win at Carlisle, beating some decent horses, many of whom would rate right at the very top of this contest.
Sure, the colt has since failed to fire in a couple of very hot races, including at York three weeks ago, though he has less on his plate here, so don’t be surprised to see an improved performance. After all, the form of his win at Carlisle is far from poor, and there’s plenty of substance to it. Combine this with how effective Karl Burke generally is with young horses of this nature and 14/1 looks a little generous.
