Zoulu Chief was well clear and only got caught in the closing stages up the hill at Newmarket over 6f last time. Dropping back to the minimum trip is going to play into his hands and he may well not come back to the field so easily this time around, despite the step up in grade. He looks over-priced to me and is an each-way play.

Ralph Beckett’s Skellet made a pleasing racecourse debut under a hands and heels ride when finishing fourth before showing the benefit of that run with a very comprehensive winning display at Salisbury. That form has been boosted since and she now tests her ability at Grade 3 level. A win here may well make a splash in next year’s 1,000 Guineas ante-post markets.

The William Haggas yard have a particularly good record at this venue and they saddle a couple of runners with Lordship and my selection being towards the top of the handicap. Kingfisher King looks as if he has been crying out for a step up in trip. The slightly quicker conditions here than at Doncaster last time will suit as well.

Richard Hannon’s Chindit is the most reliable runner in this line-up and he drops back to Group 2 level at what could prove his optimum distance of 7f. He’s flexible in regards to tactics and should get the race set up to suit if he can track the front-running Audience and pounce late.

Mr Monaco’s is another Ralph Beckett runner who enjoyed his first experience here and then showed significant improvement to win on his second. His Leicester victory didn’t look possible with a quarter of a mile to run, but he finally got the message and powered through the line. He’s going to improve a chunk for that experience.

Humanity hasn’t looked back since the blinkers were applied, with two very smooth successes at Lingfield and Kempton being the result. The handicapper hasn’t been able to have his say as my pick is due another 8lb rise in the ratings so looks thrown in here, based on his future rating, at the bottom of the weights.

Pisanello looks to be flying under the radar here at double-digit odds, considering he has equal form to quite a few of the other runners in this one. He’s also nestled back down to an attractive-looking mark of 88 and this should be the ideal set-up with a few front runners lining up. He can be produced fast and late by his talented claimer Mark Winn for an each-way pay day.

Ollie Sangster’s Shuwari ran an absolute stormer here behind Carla’s Way when the track was not only riding fast but there was a strong tailwind last time. She did incredibly well to close for a second-place finish that day. Classical Song looks a danger having won really well at Sandown but Shuwari has a touch more seasoning at this point in her career.
