Islanders 2022-23 Season Preview
The Islanders are celebrating their 50th anniversary in the NHL this season. The current team is looking to redeem itself after a disappointing 2021-22 season, when they didn't even qualify for the postseason.
The New York Islanders will play the first five games of the 2022-23 season at home at UBS Arena. Last season they played on the road for 13 straight games. The opening game against the Florida Panthers is the toughest game.
Mat Barzal signed an eight-year contract extension worth $73 million. Lou Lamoriello is a fan of Barzaal. The team is looking for an offensive player to increase their aggressiveness. Barzoal's natural speed and playmaking ability are valuable assets for the team.
Ilya Sorokin and Semyon Varlamov are the Islanders' top two goalkeepers. Sorokin has the third best preseason odds to win the Vezina. Varlamov had his worst statistical season with the Isles last season.
Lane Lambert was promoted to head coach. The Islanders played their preseason finale on Saturday. Their lines are similar to last season's. Bellows and Johnston fill in for the unavailable Wahlstrom and Clutterbuck. Romanov and Salo take over the left defenseman spots. Scott Mayfield is expected to be Sala's partner on the third pairing.
