Jets vs Senators Picks, Predictions & Odds Tonight

The Jets are an incredibly sound defensive team and even though they're on the road, they're well-rested, having not played since Tuesday. Connor Hellebuyck will continue his Vezina-worthy play and shut down the Sens in Ottawa.

The Winnipeg Jets have been the NHL’s best team since the start of December and will aim to keep their hot streak going this afternoon when they head to Canadian Tire Centre to take on the Ottawa Senators.

Winnipeg’s top-ranked defense, which is a big reason it's a road favorite in NHL odds, is allowing fewer than two goals per game over that span and will look to shut the door against an Ottawa team that’s picked up just two wins in its last eight outings.

Find out if the visitors can keep soaring towards the top of the standings in my Jets vs. Senators NHL picks and predictions for Saturday, January 20.

Jets vs Senators predictions

The Winnipeg Jets had their franchise-record eight-game win streak snapped last Saturday but got back to their winning ways with a 4-2 victory against the Islanders on Tuesday. Kyle Connor scored in his first game back after missing 16 contests with a knee injury while Connor Hellebuyck stopped 35 shots to earn first-star honors.

Hellebuyck hasn’t officially been announced as today’s starter for the Jets but he’ll likely take the net as Winnipeg hasn’t played in four days. Hellebuyck’s play over the last couple of months has put him in the Vezina odds conversation, posting an incredible .941 save percentage and 1.74 goals against average since the start of December while going 12-1-2 over that span.

Hellebuyck has allowed two goals or fewer in 19 of his last 20 appearances behind a strong Jets defense that’s giving up just 2.38 expected goals per game at 5-on-5 this season, tied for the seventh-best mark in the NHL. Winnipeg’s defense has gotten even stronger since its 17-2-2 run started in December as the Jets are allowing a stingy 1.67 GAPG.

Meanwhile, the Ottawa Senators have scored 3.25 GPG since the turn of the calendar but have given up a league-worst 4.63 GAPG over that span — the main reason why they own the second-worst record in the NHL since January 1.

Despite Ottawa’s solid offense, I don’t see the struggling Sens breaking down the Jets’ elite defense, so I like Winnipeg to hold them to Under 2.5 goals today.

My best bet: Senators team total Under 2.5 goals (+105 at SIA)

Jets vs Senators same-game parlay

Senators TT Under 2.5 goals

Jets TT Over 3.5 goals

Under 7.5

The Jets are giving up almost nothing defensively and haven’t allowed more than two goals in a game since December 18 – a 3-2 overtime loss to the Canadiens. Meanwhile, Winnipeg has also scored at least four goals in 11 of its last 19 games.

With Connor, the team’s best goal scorer, back in the lineup, the Jets should have no problem putting up four against one of the worst defensive teams in the NHL.

Jets vs Senators moneyline and Over/Under analysis

The Jets skate into today’s matchup as the road favorite at -135 on the moneyline while the total opened at 6.5. With the way both clubs are trending, I think this should be a relatively comfortable win for the visitors as their defense holds this contest to Under 6.5 total goals.

Winnipeg has suffered just three losses — and only one regulation defeat — in its last 16 contests while beating some strong teams like the Kings, Avalanche, Bruins, and Lightning during that stretch. The Senators should be a relatively easy out for the Jets as the hosts have been outscored 37-26 through their last eight contests while allowing nearly 5 GAPG.

Ottawa’s only shot at taking down Winnipeg will be to outscore them but with Hellebuyck posting a .950 SV% and 1.52 GAA this month, that seems unlikely.

Thanks to their elite defense, the Jets have cashed the Under in four straight games and eight of their last 10. Winnipeg has also seen Under 6.5 total goals scored in 11 of its last 12 games, so this should be a pretty low-scoring affair.

These clubs have not faced off in almost exactly a year but have combined for six goals or fewer in six of their last eight meetings.
