Maple Leafs vs. Oilers picks and odds March 1: Betting lines, prop bets and predictions

Canada’s two best teams clash tonight when the Toronto Maple Leafs take on the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place.

The pregame narrative: Both squads have been busy off the ice but now it’s time to back it up on the ice. We’re expecting the Leafs to take care of business on the road and backing Auston Matthews to stay hot in the goalscoring department.

NHL odds as of 9:02 a.m. on 03/01/2023.

Maple Leafs vs. Oilers picks

Best Bet: Maple Leafs moneyline (-134)

Toronto is absolutely rolling right now and we don’t see why it would stop against an Edmonton team that’s leaking oil.

The Leafs have won seven of their last 10 games, including their past three. In that span, they’ve outscored opponents 39 to 23 and won six games by three-plus goals. It’s a heater and a lot of that has to do with the way Ilya Samsonov is playing.

The Russian netminder has been lights out in this span (6-2-0) with a .924 save percentage and a 2.125 goals-against average. That said, Samsonov’s been a stalwart all season. His 2.30 GAA ranks fourth in the NHL while his .918 SV% is good for eighth.

He’s expected to start tonight and will be opposite Stuart Skinner.

The Oilers netminder has lost five of his last seven starts (2-3-2) with a .896 SV% in that stretch. But all blame can’t be placed on the goalie.

Edmonton has been struggling to defend lately and has allowed the seventh-most even-strength chances over its past 10 games (507), per Natural Stat Trick. The Oilers have lost seven games (3-3-4) in that span.

That probably explains why Ken Holland gave up a haul for Mattias Ekholm, but it’s unclear if the former Nashville Predator will play tonight.

Key stat: The Leafs have won three of their past four road games.

Quick picks

Matthews to score (-108): Matthews isn’t having a fantastic year — by his standards — but he’s still potted 28 goals in 53 games.

Toronto’s top dog is coming off a two-goal performance against the Seattle Kraken and we think he’ll stay hot tonight.

Matthews has scored in seven of his last nine games against the Oilers with a total of eight tucks in that span.

Leafs over 3.5 goals (+110): The Leafs are filling the net with ease lately and we expect that to continue. Toronto has scored four-plus goals in four of its past six contests with an average of 4.33 goals scored in that span.

Edmonton is a solid team but we’ve already mentioned the troubling amount of chances it’s conceding as of late. The Oilers have given up four-plus goals in five of their past 10 games.
