Michigan's Jim Harbaugh compares QBs to Kaepernick, Smith Detroit News
Jim Harbaugh has benched Alex Smith twice in 10 years. Cade McNamara is now the backup for J.J. McCarthy. Harbaugh announced before the season that he would start the opener against Colorado State and McCarthy would take the second game against Hawaii. Michigan won both games by a combined 90 points. The team is playing Connecticut on Saturday. The Huskies have a 1-1 series record against Michigan. It's a game that is considered a big game for the Husky's. They are the defending champions. In 2011, Smith led the San Francisco 49ers to a 13-3 record and an NFC West division title. He had a concussion in the next game and never got his job back.

Harbaugh and Connecticut coach Jim Mora will be facing each other for the first time. They almost crossed paths in the Pac-10, but Harbaugh went from Stanford to the 49ers and Moro went to UCLA. On Sept. 17, 1983, Harbaugh was a freshman back-up quarterback at Michigan when they lost 25-24 at Washington.
