The New York Islanders defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs in overtime on Thursday, 4-3. New York now heads to the road to begin a four-game road trip starting in Nashville. New York is 8-7-4 on the road.

New York had trailed by two goals early in the second period but scored twice in the span of nine minutes to knot the game at three, forcing overtime. That is where  Matthew Barzal delivered the game-winner just 21 seconds into the extra frame. Barzal led the way in the victory, scoring a goal and adding three assists. Barzal now has nine points over his last five games.

Illya Sorokin was solid in the victory, stopping 32 shots. Sorokin (13-8-8, 3.19, .909) has a solid save percentage but the GAA is not great. The Islanders have not received good goaltending this season, 21st in goals-against average at 3.29. The 29th-best penalty killing in the NHL is not helping them (73.0%) and they are 19th in goals per game (3.07).

The Nashville Predators were shocked by the Anaheim Ducks on Monday, 5-3. Nashville takes on the Stars in Dallas on Friday, but this preview was written prior to the conclusion of that contest. The Predators are home for just one game before returning to the road. They are 12-11-0 at home.

Anaheim scored three goals in the first period to take command of this game. The Ducks scored the first five goals of the contest overall before Nashville finally got on the board, scoring three goals in the span of 10 minutes to make this a respectable contest. It was a tough outing for Juuse Saros, who allowed five goals on 33 shots. Saros (16-15-1, 3.09, .899) and Kevin Lankinen (5-3-0, 3.14, .901) have been only slightly better than the Islanders this season, as Nashville is 19th in goals-against average (3.17) and the team is 25th on the penalty kill (76.7%).

Three different players scored goals in the loss and Michael McCarron had two assists. Gustav Nyquist had an assist and now has seven points over his last five games. In fact, he has points in nine straight games. Nashville is 18th in goals per game (3.10).
