Boys Soccer

Class 4A

(1-5) Council Rock North 2, (12-1) La Salle 1 (OT)

Windsor Varady was the hero in the Indians’ thrilling overtime win over La Salle in the Class 4A quarterfinals. Varady beat several defenders, racing towards the net and sinking the game-winning shot over the Explorers’ diving goalie. Indians’ goalie Calvin Hopkins made several impressive saves in OT to keep the Indians’ season going until Varady’s game-winner. Mark Mazzoni scored in the first half for La Salle, with Isaac Morais scoring the equalizer for CR North in the second half. Freshman goalie Grant Kiefer, getting his second straight start due to injury, also made several big saves to keep his team in it.

CR North will play Conestoga, the District One 4A champions, in the semifinals on Tuesday.

(1-6) CB South 2, (7-2) North Allegheny 0

Oleksandr Sokol scored a goal in the first half, with an assist from Anthony Bice, as the Titans continue to defy the odds as the sixth-seed from District One. Christian Canally added another goal in the second half, though the insurance was unnecessary thanks to the Titans’ defense, which held NA without a shot on goal.

(7-1) Norwin 1 [5-3 PK], (1-2) Abington 1

The Ghosts took a 1-0 lead into halftime, thanks to a goal by freshman Sean Westmoreland, but Norwin tied it in the second half. Goalie Justin Waterfall held Norwin scoreless through two overtime periods, which led to the game coming down to penalty kicks. Braeden Brownholtz and Daniel Oliviera converted their PKs for the Ghosts, but Norwin secured the victory when they converted their fifth kick. The Ghosts, who won the SOL Liberty division title, finished their season with a 21-4 record that included a trip to the district championship game.

Class 1A

(1-1) Faith Christian 6, (11-1) Moravian Academy 0

It was another dominant all-around performance for the Lions, who held a 5-0 lead by halftime. Guilherme Machado led the charge with two goals, while Ben Goodrich, Ryan Noel, Oriola Pedrola, and Ryley Gardner scored one apiece. The Lions will play fellow District One team and BAL rival Delco Christian in the semifinals.

Girls Soccer

Class 4A

(1-1) Pennridge 6, (1-3) Downingtown East 0

The Rams continue to make it look easy, scoring six unanswered goals for the second straight game in the PIAA state tournament. Gabriella Howley led the way with two goals, while Tori Angelo, Lindsey Balmer, Hailey Primwhere and Liv Grenda netted one apiece. The Rams have yet to allow a goal in the postseason, while scoring 32 goals in six playoff games.

Class 3A

(2-1) Abington Heights 2, (12-1) Archbishop Wood 1

Class 1A

(1-1) Dock Mennonite 4, (11-2) Pine Grove 0

Field Hockey

Class 2A

(1-4) Gwynedd Mercy 3, (3-3) Ephrata 2 (OT)

Freshman Kendall Deluca scored the game-winning goal in overtime to send the Monarchs on to the semifinals. Deluca’s chance to play hero came when she took Maddie Bogle’s shot and tapped it in for the golden goal. DeLuca also scored a goal in regulation, as did Bogle. While Ephrate scored twice in the second half to force overtime, the Monarchs’ defense dominated in overtime. Lauren Kelly, Reese Westerman and Courtney Gallagher led the strong defensive effort for the Monarchs, with goalie Jenny Keagy making several impressive saves in the second half.
