Will Chelsea finally get a win following their massive January spending spree? On Saturday, the Blues will host the Premier League’s last-placed team, Southampton, at Stamford Bridge. Southampton sacked manager Nathan Jones after last weekend’s 2-1 home loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers. The experiment of appointing Jones did not work and now the club is in search of a third manager this season. Former Leeds manager Jesse Marsch, who was sacked two weeks ago, was expected to be named coach. However, talks between Marsch and Southampton have broken down.

There is a strong argument that Chelsea will be an unstoppable force once the team gels. Whether Potter will be manager by that time is anyone’s guess. However, the club claims it is sticking by the former Brighton man despite the lack of wins. The problem will be whether the players stick with Potter or rebel against him. 

Chelsea were beaten 2-1 by Southampton in the reverse fixture. It was the Saints’ first win over Chelsea since 2019-20. Ralph Hasenhuttl was the Southampton manager at the time and since then, the Saints have gone into freefall. Southampton will be managed by caretaker boss Ruben Selles. For a team that is struggling to win games, it seems a stretch for it to win both halves. However, Southampton are the Premier League’s last-placed team. They are on a three-game league losing streak ahead of the trip to London and have conceded the second-most goals in the competition. 

Southampton allowed 1.89 goals per game in their opening 22 matches in the league. Yes, Chelsea do not score a lot of goals, just 23 in 22 games for an average of 1.05 per match. However, the Blues have the players to break out this weekend against the worst team in the competition. 

Southampton could be better without Jones on the touchline. However, there is a lack of direct at Southampton and Chelsea should take advantage of them playing at Stamford Bridge. The Blues could win both halves.

Three of Southampton’s last six games in all competitions saw them lose without scoring a goal. Although Chelsea are not winning games, their defence is keeping games low scoring for the most part.

Felix looked incredibly lively in both league appearances for Chelsea. He has an xG of 0.97 with the Blues. If there was a player that looked like scoring for Chelsea versus Borussia Dortmund, it was Felix, as he missed the glorious chances at Signal Iduna Park. 

Felix could ravage the Southampton defence and get a goal on Saturday. He is our pick to score anytime for the Blues.

The reverse fixture between these sides saw a total of three yellow cards handed out. Southampton took two of the cards, while Chelsea had one player booked. 

Saturday’s game is a must-win for both sides. Chelsea are 10th in the standings and four points off the top six. They won just one of their last six games in the league, and each of the last three finished as draws. Although Chelsea claim the pressure is low on Potter, it is likely growing, and plenty of out-of-work managers will fancy the job if he fails.
