2,000 Guineas fallout: Luxembourg's price for the Derby is 'ludicrous'

Where would you go next with the first three and did anything catch your eye in behind?

'I can't get onboard with Luxembourg being 2-1 for the Derby'

Charlie Appleby indicated Coroebus could go to the St James's Palace and the National Stakes winner Native Trail back to Ireland for their equivalent and I like that plan. The winner could be this year's superstar miler.

I can't get onboard with Luxembourg being as short as 2-1 for the Derby. On the face of it he ran an excellent trial but he looked unbalanced at several stages and can race awkwardly, so I'm not sure Epsom will suit. 

Lusail could be the one to take out of the race from those in behind as he stormed home after being denied a clear run. Look out for him at the Curragh or, preferably, in the Commonwealth Cup.

The obvious route for Luxembourg would be to head to the Derby and while the bookmakers think he is a good thing, his current price is ludicrous.

For Native Trail and Coroebus, the Irish Guineas and St James's Palace Stakes are logical targets and I'd love to see them take each other on again to set up a rivalry right the way through the Flat season.

Should they wish to step Native Trail up in trip however, the Coral Eclipse and Juddmonte International could be the perfect races as despite having a terrific record at Newmarket, he could be even better on a flatter track.

Luxembourg did really well to get into any sort of position to challenge, having only had one horse behind him three furlongs out. He still gives the slight impression of a gangly teenager, much as he did in the Beresford Stakes last year. 

He’s clearly a major player for the Derby and his class will get him a long way, though my suspicion is he may end up best at the intermediate ten furlongs. 

The first two are clearly high-class milers and there seems no rush to up either one in trip.

Of the rest, Eydon was the only one of those ridden close to the pace to finish his race off and probably ran the most even fractions of all. The Prix du Jockey Club might be the spot for him.
