2021 Nunthorpe Stakes at York: the runners, the odds, the verdict

Battaash: two-time winner of the Nunthorpe has now been retired

The feature race on the third day of the Ebor festival is all about speed, as crack sprinters do battle over a flying five furlongs in the Nunthorpe. With Battaash, winner of the race in 2019 and 2020, retired, the stage is set for a new champion to emerge.

2 Dakota Gold

Seven-year-old who has first attempt at a Group 1, but he excels at York; not ruled out

Trainer: Michael Dods

3 Emaraaty Ana

Won Hamilton conditions race in good style last month but up against it back up in grade

Made all in three-year-old handicap over C&D at Dante meeting but has plenty to find here

Trainer: Les Eyre

6 Dragon Symbol

Running well in top sprints and, kept to 5f, the predicted red-hot gallop should help

Trainer: Archie Watson
Jockey: Oisin Murphy
Odds: 5-1

7 Golden Pal

Likely this US raider will set a ferocious pace but he could be tough to catch

Trainer: Wesley Ward
Jockey: Frankie Dettori
Odds: 9-4 favourite

8 Rohaan

Won the Wokingham off a very lofty mark but underwhelming in Group 1s since

Trainer: David Evans
Jockey: Shane Kelly

11 Liberty Beach

Highly admirable mare with some strong form, albeit others have achieved more

Trainer: John Quinn
Jockey: Jason Hart
Odds: 33-1

Second in this last year but needs to prove it was no one-off, having been below par since

Trainer: Michael Dods
Jockey: Paul Mulrennan
Odds: 20-1

13 Suesa

Seriously impressive at Glorious Goodwood; leading form claims; unraced on good/faster

Trainer: Francois Rohaut
Jockey: William Buick
Odds: 11-4

14 Winter Power

Two C&D Listed wins from the front this season and is clearly well suited by this track

Trainer: Tim Easterby

15 Chipotle

Has had excuses the last twice and this two-year-old impressed previously at Royal Ascot

Trainer: Eve Johnson Houghton
Jockey: Hollie Doyle
Odds: 25-1

The verdict

Golden Pal should set a hot pace, which will suit Suesa, but she's unraced on good/faster. Preference is for the two-year-old Chipotle.
