2023 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile Handicapping

The counterpart to the (G1) Breeders’ Cup Mile on turf, the (G1) Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile kicks off Day 2 of the Breeders’ Cup World Championships. The race is open to horses age three and older, running a mile on the Santa Anita dirt track.

Betting Angles: If recent history is the guide, the Dirt Mile should be one of the easier races to handicap of the entire BC weekend. On the BC schedule since 2007, in the first six years, three double-digit long shots won, and three winners closed late. In the past 10 years, however, the favourite has won five times – including the last three in a row – and six of those 10 winners wired the field, while a seventh pressed the pace throughout.

2023 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile Free Pick & Handicapping: Cody’s Wish Race Odds: 9-5

The defending race champ, Cody’s Wish was well-beaten two starts back when trying to stretch out to 1 1/8 miles, but he’s been money in the bank at this distance with a perfect 7-for-7 record in races at one mile.

If there is any chink in his armour, it’s that he’s not the quickest out of the gate, and in fact the past performance comment for his last two indicate gate trouble. At the same time, the comment line for last year’s BC Dirt Mile also indicates trouble at the gate, and it didn’t matter. And this year he may be facing an easier field.

2023 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile Free Pick & Handicapping: Charge It Race Odds: 5-1

While he does have a pair of wins on the season, Charge It has also raced against the favourite twice in the past few months and has come up short both times.

Back in June he was fourth, beaten 5 1/2 lengths by Cody’s Wish in the (G1) Metropolitan Handicap, and then finished just a head behind in fourth when that one ran third in the 1 1/8 miles (G1) Whitney. Although he has won twice and ran second twice in five starts at one mile, he’s going to have to run the best race of his career to turn the tables here.

Zozos Race Odds: 6-1

A perfect 3-for-3 at the distance, Zozos also represents the early speed in the race, and will likely go straight to the front and try and hold off the favourite for as long as he can.

He has four wins in his last five starts, and in three of those he took the field wire-to-wire. He comes in off a win in the (G3) Ack Ack Stakes going one mile at Churchill Downs, the only graded-stakes win of his career.

Algiers Race Odds: 6-1

A bit of a wild card in the field, the Irish-bred Algiers has raced in multiple countries, at multiple tracks, on multiple surfaces and at multiple distances. With all of that, he has seven wins and 16 in-the-money finishes in 22 lifetime starts, while putting just over $3 million in the bank.

Last out he ran a close up second in the (G3) Durham Cup on the all-weather track at Woodbine. He has shown good early speed in the past, and could be the one pressing Zosos out of the gate.

Barring any serious gate problems, this should be Cody’s Wish’s race to lose, and on paper there’s no reason to think he won’t win. Expect that his odds will be coming down by post time.

My hope will be that the betting public chooses to ignore Algiers, and at anything like his morning line odds I’ll use him in the exacta.
