The last of five races on Breeders’ Cup World Championships Friday. the (G1) Juvenile Turf is open to horses age two, and is run at a distance of 1 mile on the Santa Anita turf course.

Betting Angles: On paper the Juvenile Turf may be one of the most competitive races historically at the BC, as since 2007 only two favourites have won – and one of those was at odds of 5-1. There have only been three winners with odds in double digits, and only one of those in the past 11 years. The most unique angle might be that between them, trainers Aiden O’Brien (5) and Charles Appleby (3) have won eight of the last 12 races.

Trained by the aforementioned Aiden O’Brien (one of three in the race for him) River Tiber comes in off a pair of tough third-place finishes in Group 1 company in England and France.

Prior to that he scored a Group 2 win in the Coventry Stakes at Newmarket. He’s one that likes to race near the front, here he’ll try and carry his speed beyond six furlongs for the first time.

Unbeaten in three straight lifetime starts, Endlessly also owns a win at the track and distance, as he rallied from mid-pack last out to win the (G3) Zuma Beach Stakes.

He’s something of a specialist at the distance, as all three of his lifetime starts have been at 1 mile on the turf. Each start has produced a faster final time, and weirdly, he’s won all three by the exact same margin of 2 1/4 lengths.

Carson’s Run Race Odds: 6-1

He will have to overcome the outside post here, but Carson’s Run has proven he can survive a wide trip, as he went 10 wide last out and still prevailed in the (G1) Summer Stakes at Woodbine over a rival that was a next out winner.

That race was run on turf rated as good, as was his previous runner-up finish in the (G3) With Anticipation Stakes at Saratoga. He started his career with a win on firm going at Saratoga, and it seems this steadily improving colt will appreciate the firm turf at Santa Anita.

My Boy Prince Race Odds: 8-1

Ontario-bred invader My Boy Prince has done all his running at Woodbine, where two back he was the runner-up in the Summer Stakes, and then last out was the easy winner of the restricted Cup and Saucer Stakes going 1 1/16 miles on the Woodbine turf.

In a race without a lot of other early speed, he’s a confirmed front runner, and could be dangerous if he gets loose on an un-contested lead.

It was mentioned up top that the Juvenile Turf is typically one of the most competitive races on the BC card, and this year’s edition looks no different.

A case can be made for at least four or five in here, and it may be one you want to watch where the odds are going before making a final pick.

I’ve settled on Endlessly and Carson’s Run, and while I want to give the former the edge based on his win at the track and distance, I have a feeling his odds will be coming way down as post time draws near, and the latter will offer better value. So I’ll likely be making a final decision on which to put my Win money closer to post-time, but either way those two will be my exacta play.
