2023 Glorious Goodwood preview: Betting tips for Qatar Goodwood Festival

Goodwood betting tips:

The 2023 Qatar Goodwood Festival takes place between 1-5 August and betting sites are already offering odds on the meeting better known as ‘Glorious Goodwood’.

It’s one of the highlight events of the racing calendar and punters can enjoy five days of quality racing, with many of the star performers at the recent Royal Ascot descending on the scenic Sussex track in a bid for more glory.

Day One of Glorious Goodwood features the Goodwood Cup Stakes, with Gregory trading as the short-priced favourite to win this Group 1 encounter.

We believe that the John & Thady-Gosden-trained charge can get customers off to a winning start, with the three-year-old having racked up three successive victories in a relatively short career.

Sent off as the even-money favourite to win the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot, Gregory managed to handle the one mile and six furlongs very well despite dwelling at the start, with the horse now aiming to travel over two miles.

Andrew Balding’s Coltrane has to be respected after a runner-up spot in the Ascot Gold Cup, with the horse sent off as the 11/4 favourite and losing to eventual winner Courage Mon Ami by less than a length. Perhaps the latter will also be in the shake-up after that long distance Group 1 victory.

The Qatar Sussex Stakes takes pride of place on Day Two of Glorious Goodwood 2023, with Paddington many punters’ idea of banker material. It’s hard to knock the form of a horse who has recorded five successive wins this year, the latest of which came in the Coral-Eclipse. This followed a convincing performance in the St James’s Palace Stakes.

The Group 1 encounters keep coming at this Festival and that includes the Qatar Nassau Stakes on Day Three, with this being a race for fillies and mares. It’s little surprise to see Blue Rose Cen head the market on betting apps based on her achievements to date, with Christopher Head’s talented horse having secured some notable wins at Longchamp and Chantilly.

Blue Rose Cen was able to score in the Prix de Diane Longines over one mile, two and a half furlongs when claiming a four-length victory, although we’re prepared to plump for Soul Sister at a much bigger price on racing betting sites. This is one of several John & Thady Gosden-trained runners in the field but the only one who has won an Epsom Oaks this season.

Despite racing wide rarely in the classic encounter, the horse ran brilliantly over one mile and four furlongs, with the three-year-old capable of doing the same over a stiffer distance. She wasn’t able to oblige as the 8/5 favourite in the Grand Prix de Paris at Longchamp, although she was denied a clear run on that occasion.

The highlight race on Day Four of Glorious Goodwood is the King George Qatar Stakes, with this being a five-furlong dash and it’s Highfield Princess who heads the market. The John Quinn-trained mare has solid credentials for an encounter over this short distance not to mention a weight advantage over several rivals.

The price might be too short for some, with Equality and Twilight Calls more attractive each-way betting propositions. The former is bidding for a third successive victory for trainer Charles Hills, with victories coming at Windsor and Sandown Park. The win in the Coral Charge was especially impressive and there could be more to come from this runner.

The final day of the 2023 Qatar Goodwood Festival takes place on Saturday 5 August and includes the Coral Stewards’ Cup.

2023 Stewards’ Cup: Latest odds

This is a wide open encounter where a big field will stampede for six furlongs and we’re intrigued by the chances of Apollo One. The five-year-old has been performing smartly over this distance without a victory this season.

The Peter Charalambous and James Clutterbuck-trained runner found one too good at the Royal Ascot meeting when Saint Lawrence claimed a victory in the Wokingham Stakes, although Apollo One should once again be in contention and this is a horse who previously ran well at Epsom in the JRA Tokyo Trophy Handicap, with a place potentially on the cards here.
