Who is Frankie Dettori riding at Glorious Goodwood?

Tuesday August 1

4.00 – World Pool Lennox Stakes (7f, Group 2)

Dettori has four rides on day one of Glorious Goodwood and it is unlikely he will go home empty-handed. The Ralph Beckett-trained Kinross won the Lennox Stakes in 2021 and was denied the follow-up last year by a neck.

The Kingman gelding ended the previous season in really sparkling form with wins at York, Doncaster, Longchamp and Ascot, before a good effort over a mile at the Breeders’ Cup in America.

He came up shy on his seasonal bow in the Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot but returns here having posted a fine second in the July Cup at Newmarket since. His course-and-distance form, allied to a drop in grade, makes him a star chance for Dettori on day one.

4.35 – Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup Stakes (2m, Group 1)

Perhaps the key moment of the entire week for Dettori comes in the opening day feature race as Ascot Gold Cup winner Courage Mon Ami puts his perfect record on the line.

The John and Thady Gosden-trained Frankel gelding defied his inexperience to win at Ascot in June in what was only his fourth career start, wearing down the determined Coltrane inside the final furlong of that 2m 4f contest.

They meet again now and the likes of Emily Dickinson (fourth) and Eldar Eldarov (seventh) are also back for another crack at Frankie. With five Goodwood Cup wins behind him – Kayf Tara (1999), Schiaparelli (2009), Opinion Poll (2011) and Stradivarius (2019, 2020) – Dettori is one of six riders sitting on the record number of victories in this race. It would be a brave call to back him going out on his own now.

Wednesday August 2

3.35 – Qatar Sussex Stakes (1m, Group 1)

The main event on day two at Goodwood is the Sussex Stakes – the one-mile Group 1 often dubbed the Duel on the Downs.

Paddington is the star attraction this year for Aidan O’Brien, after wins in the Irish 2,000 Guineas and the Eclipse at Sandown. He is the one to beat but Dettori rides Inspiral for Team Gosden and they are key contenders.

The Frankel filly is a three-time Group 1-winning miler in her own right. She has become just a touch tougher to predict these days, but it was only an inspired Triple Time that denied her in the Queen Anne at Royal Ascot on her seasonal bow, and she could be a lively threat to the market leader.

Selection: Inspiral @ 4/1 with Boylesports

Thursday August 3

3.00 – John Pearce Racing Gordon Stakes (1m 4f, Group 3)

Dettori’s alliance with John Gosden has been so crucial to the jockey career, particularly its latter part, and they combine in the famous Oppenheimer silks with Lion’s Pride in the Gordon Stakes on Thursday.

A son of Roaring Lion, he was second in a Newcastle maiden in May on his debut having failed to race as a two-year-old, and he had few problems going one better at Kempton (1m 3f) on the Polytrack on July 12, beating a subsequent Newmarket novice winner, Middle Earth, with any amount in hand.

He makes his turf debut now and could advertise potential St Leger credentials if he takes out the Gordon Stakes.
