USC quarterback Caleb Williams leads the 2023 Heisman Trophy odds ahead of the college football season. Can the rifle-armed quarterback successfully repeat as the Heisman winner, or will one of our 2023 Heisman Trophy long shots claim the title of the best player in college football?

2023 Heisman Trophy odds

The first Heisman (then known as the DAC Trophy) was handed to Jay Berwanger of the University of Chicago. USC quarterback Caleb Williams was the latest to win the Heisman and extended a streak of QBs winning six of the last seven awards.

Unsurprisingly, Williams is the out-and-out favorite to win the Heisman again, though only one player has ever won more than once (Archie Griffin in 1974 and 1975). Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. (+3000 or better) is 12th in odds and the first non-quarterback to appear on the board.

2023 Heisman Trophy pick: Who is the best player in college football?

Caleb Williams is the best player in college football, full stop. He could be a top-10 quarterback in the NFL come springtime if he was given the chance to suit up on Sunday, too, and he is almost a slam-dunk first-overall pick in next year’s NFL Draft.

Whether or not Williams can win the Heisman again, however, is a different question. He completed 66.6% of his passes en route to 4,537 passing yards, 52 total touchdowns, and only five interceptions. USC is a top contender to make the college football playoff and could win the natty if their defense improves — but Williams has a high bar to clear with his numbers from last year as far as Heisman voting goes.

The other top candidates have lots of potential and/or were exciting players to watch, but they will all struggle to rack up the sheer volume of stats that Williams (and other past winners) did.

Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers, for example, had less than half of his passing yards and less than one-third of his touchdowns.

Although a near-impossible feat, we don’t see anyone else in the top five putting together a better season than Williams, especially considering his team’s potential to win the Pac-12 and get to the CFP.

2023 Heisman Trophy long shots: Which underdogs could sneak into the race?

We mentioned Harrison Jr. earlier, and we want to bring his name back. The son of the Hall of Famer caught 77 passes for 1,263 yards and 14 touchdowns and could be a real threat, but we haven’t seen enough of new Buckeyes' quarterback Kyle McCord to trust him to get the ball to Harrison Jr. enough for him to win.

Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. (+1600 or better) and Georgia’s Carson Beck (+2000 or better) are two interesting prospects for very different reasons.

Penix Jr. threw for 4,641 yards, 31 touchdowns, and eight interceptions last season, while Beck is taking over for a UGA team that is favored to win the national championship.

Overall, our favorite 2023 Heisman Trophy long shot pick is Michigan running back Blake Corum (+5000 or better). He ran for 1,463 yards and 18 touchdowns last season before going down with a knee injury and is an integral piece of a devastating Michigan running game.
