Iowa is among the more respected college football teams, and we’re taking a look at 2023 Iowa futures bets, including win total and Big Ten odds.

2023 Iowa futures odds: Under 8.5 wins (-123 or better)

The Big Ten is going to be a tough conference to win because of all the competition within the league. One of the teams expected to contend in the Big Ten West is Iowa.

Let’s start with the negative. Football is all about outscoring opponents, and the Iowa offense made that very difficult by scoring just 18.7 points per game in Big Ten games last season. They brought in Michigan transfer quarterback Cade McNamara to help remedy those woes and fortified the offensive line.

Now, the positives. Iowa is routinely outstanding on defense and was again in 2022, allowing the second-fewest points per game (13.31) only behind Illinois. They lost first-round draft picks Lukas Van Ness and Jack Campbell but bring back all-conference cornerback Cooper DeJean, who had three pick-6's, and several others.

The front seven is comprised of three multi-year starters and several transfers that should help defensive coordinator Phil Parker have his group back at an elite level.

The key for Iowa will be improving the offense. The entire offensive line is back, and running back Kaleb Johnson flashed in several instances last year. If McNamara can successfully open up the defense, this team will become very dangerous.

Iowa will have to start the year hot to have a chance at cashing the over. They open up with Utah State and Iowa State before traveling to Penn State a month into the season. They also have Purdue and Wisconsin on the board but get to avoid Michigan and Ohio State.

We think the Hawkeyes have the potential to win nine or 10 games, but we also expect the offense to still be limited and the defense to take a step back without its 2022 stars.

2023 Big Ten odds: Bet on Iowa to win the Big Ten championship (+1600 or better)?

We don’t see Iowa producing a better regular-season record than Michigan or Ohio State, both of which have legitimate chances to go undefeated (though they play each other late in the year).

Iowa’s best path to a Big Ten title would come via the postseason. They are in the West division, which means their top rivals are Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Illinois. We see a world in which the Hawkeyes finish with the best record in the West and make the conference championship game. They’d just need to play one good game at that point to capture the title.
