NASCAR Handicapping

NASCAR’s Cup Series makes the move to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway this weekend for the South Point 400. This race marks the first of the third round of the 2023 playoffs, with the final eight drivers now competing for the four spots in the Championship race.

Kyle Larson is installed as the favourite to win this week. Will Byron and Denny Hamlin follow, with Tyler Reddick and Martin Truex Jr. behind them. Larson won the spring Las Vegas race back in 2021, while Byron won the spring race earlier this year.

This edition was last won by Joey Logano, who comes in at +3000 to go back-to-back.

Along with Larson, Byron, Hamlin, Reddick, and Truex Jr., rounding out the top eight are Chris Buescher, Christopher Bell, and Ryan Blaney.

The 1.5-mile layout at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway will serve as the starting point on the final six races of the season. 19 different drivers have wins in the first 32 races of the season.

NASCAR 2023 South Point 400 Race Odds: Denny Hamlin +550

Hamlin has looked great in the last two fall races at Las Vegas, leading more laps than any other driver each time, finishing third in 2020 and winning his first race in Vegas last season. He led 31 laps in the March race, but a drivetrain issue knocked him back to 32nd.

He won the Coca Cola 600 on a 1.5-mile layout, and was runner-up at Darlington on its 1.266-mile layout. This is the type of course he’s faired well on in this car.

With the next three playoff tracks lining up well for him, Hamlin could start some momentum towards the Cup with a win here.

NASCAR 2023 South Point 400 Race Odds: Martin Truex Jr. +750

Truex has been very consistent in Vegas, with finishes between fourth and eighth in his last seven trips to Sin City. He’s finished eighth or better in 11 of his last 12 races on this track, with a pair of victories in that time as well.

The playoffs haven’t been overly favourable to him even though he is inside the top eight, as he doesn’t have a top 15 finish in the playoff races, but he has accrued enough stage points to stay above the cut line.

Could this be the site of where he turns things around and puts together a winning performance?

NASCAR Odds: Kyle Busch +1300

Busch needed a win last week to remain in the playoffs, but he couldn’t pull through, though he did manage a third-pace finish. While he has some disappointing finishes of late, he does have three wins on the year. Now set to race on his home track, where he’s finished sixth or better in five of his last six visits, this could be where he breaks through again.

He does already have a win earlier this year on a high-speed, high tire wear track at Auto Club.

NASCAR Odds: Bubba Wallace +2000

Wallace led 29 laps and won the first stage in this race last year before a wreck. He then followed that up with a fourth place finish in the spring. He performs better on the intermediates, and the Toyotas perform best thanks to their speed. Bubba himself won at Kansas last fall, and led over 100 laps before finishing third at Texas a few weeks back.

NASCAR Odds: Erik Jones +4500

Jones wrecked in two of his last three races in Vegas, but he sandwiched that with an eight place finish in this race last year. He finished 10th at Darlington and third at Kansas to begin the playoffs, so there is some success of late.
