The Syracuse Orange had a shockingly good 2022 season, giving the squad an opportunity to notch consecutive winning campaigns for the first time since 2013.

Expectations weren’t high for the Orange last season but after a 6-0 start highlighted by a win against No. 15 N.C. State, hope began to grow. Syracuse reached the 14th spot in the AP Poll, the school’s first ranking since 2019 and the best ranking since 2018.

But, following the victory over the Wolfpack, Syracuse won just one of its final seven games and the season ended on a low note, as the Orange suffered a 28-20 Pinstripe Bowl loss to Minnesota.

The ups and downs of 2022 have Orange fans feeling unsure of what to expect in 2023. Another grueling ACC schedule is ahead, but one thing to feel optimistic about is the return of QB Garrett Shrader.

Last year, the 22-year-old threw for 2,640 yards and 17 touchdowns, along with 453 rushing yards.

Sack leader Caleb Okechukwu and leading tackler Marlowe Wax are a pair of foundational pieces returning to a defense that allowed only 22 points per game.

Taking the Orange to earn seven or more wins comes with +125 odds, but they weren’t enough to convince us it’s a worthy wager.

Syracuse’s start to the 2022 season was inspiring but quickly spoiled once ACC play began. The Orange lost consecutive games to Clemson, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Florida State, and Wake Forest.

While that portion of the schedule was no cakewalk, winning tough games is a necessity to hit seven wins, especially considering another difficult stretch is ahead when the Orange square off with Army, Clemson, North Carolina, and Florida State in consecutive weeks. Plus, the last two games are arguably the most challenging and will be played on the road.

The ACC schedule makers have once again shown no mercy to Syracuse, and it will cause the team to fall short of the seven-win mark.

In head coach Dino Babers’ seven years with the Orange, he went above .500 only once before 2022. Three consecutive seasons of sub-.500 football followed that excellent campaign, and that same is on track to happen after Syracuse’s stunning 2022 showing.

Since joining the ACC in 2013, Syracuse has yet to appear in a conference championship game, let alone win it all. The Orange claiming ACC supremacy would be one of the most unexpected storylines of the 2023 college football season.

The ACC is also home to three of the top 10 players with the shortest odds to win the Heisman. The Orange don’t have enough high-level players to keep pace with the conference’s upper echelon.
