The Orange were hopeless in 2020 and 2021, going 6-17 with a 3-15 record against ACC opponents. But Syracuse flipped the switch last year, posting a 7-6 record thanks to a well-balanced approach on both sides of the ball.

QB Garrett Shrader threw for 2,640 yards and 17 touchdowns, while RB Sean Tucker rushed for 1,060 yards and 11 touchdowns. DL Caleb Okechukwu paced the defense with seven sacks.

While Orange fans are grateful for a winning season, things could’ve been even sweeter had Syracuse avoided a 1-6 record to close the year. Many of the opponents Syracuse fell short against are on the 2023 schedule, leaving bettors scratching their heads when predicting the team’s upcoming campaign.

One thing for ‘Cuse fans to feel good about is the return of Shrader and Okechukwu as each enters their senior seasons.

Syracuse must take a massive leap in 2023 to have a shot at winning the ACC Championship. The teams with the top odds to win the conference are Clemson, Florida State, Louisville, and North Carolina.

Besides the Tar Heels, ‘Cuse faced each team a season ago, opening the year with a shocking 31-7 victory over the Cardinals. Things didn’t go as well vs. Clemson (27-21 loss) and Florida State (38-3 loss).

The Orange play each division favorite except Louisville in 2023, and those performances will make or break the team’s ACC Championship dreams. Plus, the Orange play the top dogs in consecutive games, and only the matchup against Clemson is at the JWA Wireless Dome.

It could work out well if Syracuse defeats the Tigers ahead of the bouts with UNC and FSU, but a crushing loss to Dabo Swinney’s squad could set the tone for the next two matchups.

Syracuse could replicate its 2022 success with another winning season, but taking the Orange to win its first ACC Championship is a longshot, and the oddsmakers agree.

Orange backers will enjoy +125 odds, making for a nice return on investment if ‘Cuse eclipses six wins.

Syracuse opens the season at the Dome against a pair of inferior schools in Colgate and Western Michigan, which should result in a 2-0 start. Up next are reigning Big Ten West champions Purdue and Army before the going gets tough against Clemson, North Carolina, and Florida State.

The only notable games remaining are vs. Pittsburgh and Wake Forest. While it isn’t the toughest schedule in college football, it’ll be enough to keep Syracuse from surpassing its win total.

Plus, the Orange have only won 7 or more games in three seasons since joining the ACC in 2013.
