STORY. I HAVE TO DO CHEMO. THERE’S GOING TO BE SURGERY. THERE’S GOING TO BE RADIATION. AND I WAS JUST LIKE, I’M ONLY 36 LIKE THIS CAN’T BE HAPPENING ON FEBRUARY 13TH, 2018. JENNIFER CHEEKS BREAST CANCER DIAGNOSIS TURNED THIS PEDIATRIC NURSE INTO A PATIENT. ONE OF THE MAIN RISK FACTORS IS BEING AFRICAN AMERICAN. SO HEARING THAT AND THEN HAVING A FAMILY HISTORY OF IT, I WAS JUST LIKE, I’M DOOMED. AT THAT TIME. IT FELT LIKE ALL OF THE ODDS WERE AGAINST HER. BUT CHEEKS KNEW GOD AND HER SUPPORT SYSTEM WERE ALWAYS FOR HER, AND THEY ALL CAME AND CHECKED ON ME AND MY FRIENDS. THEY CALLED. THEY HAD A CHEMO BOX. SO EVERY CHEMO I GOT A BOX WITH CARDS AND GIFTS AND JUST WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT AT THE FINAL CHEMO SESSION, HER VILLAGE WAS THERE AS CHEEKS MARKED A MILESTONE IN HER LONG AND HARD JOURNEY RINGING THE BELL, RONNIE WILL, I MEAN, WILL NOW FIVE YEARS CANCER FREE CHEEKS IS STILL WALKING BY. FAITH AND NOT BY SIGHT. AND SHE WILL COMMEMORATE THE BATTLE SHE WON AS A PARTICIPANT IN THIS YEAR’S KENTUCKY OAKS SURVIVORS PARADE THAT MOMENT, IT WILL BE A SOLIDIFIED THAT I AM REALLY A SURVIVOR LIKE I’M A PART OF THIS AWESOME GROUP OF MEN AND WOMEN WHO SURVIVED IT, WHO ARE SUPER HEROES AT THE PARADE CHEEKS WILL HAVE HER DAUGHTER BY HER SIDE IN HOPES OF BEING HER EXAMPLE OF A SUPERHERO JUST TO SHOW HER WE’RE STRONG, WE CAN DO THIS, SHE SAYS. HER LAP AROUND THE HISTORIC RACETRACK IS DEDICATED TO THOSE STILL IN THE FIGHT, AND THE WOMEN IN HER LIFE WHO DID NOT GET TO HAVE THIS MOMENT. I WANTED TO DO IT IN MEMORY OF MY FAMILY MEMBERS THAT DIDN’T MAKE IT AND THOSE THAT WERE CLOSE TO ME THAT BATTLED WITH CANCER. I WANT IT TO WALK FOR THEM. IN LOUISVILLE, ALEXI

The 150th Kentucky Derby is approaching quickly and submissions are now open for the 2024 Kentucky Oaks Survivors Parade.The 16th Survivors parade will be on Friday, May 3.Watch last year's Survivors Parade in the player aboveThis year’s parade will honor 150 Breast and Ovarian cancer survivors and patients.Each participant will receive tickets for themselves and a guest to attend the Kentucky Oaks and march on the track at Churchill Downs.Those who have overcome or are living with a breast or ovarian cancer diagnosis and who have never participated in the Oaks Survivors Parade are encouraged to submit their story here. Those who wish to nominate a potential participant in the parade are encouraged to share the link with the person to submit their story.All submissions must be made by Tuesday, Feb. 20.
