Ababu has his work cut out for him in restoring the sport fabric

Kenyan sports are in a bad state due to poor leadership, mismanagement, embezzlement of funds and lack of infrastructure. The government wants to co-host the Africa Cup of Nations in 2027 with Uganda and Tanzania. However, the idea is unrealistic due the country's inability to host international competitions due a lack standardised facilities.

CAF has banned Kasarani and Nyayo stadiums from hosting Fifa-accredited matches in October 2021. Some officials have thrived in self-inflicted crises within federations and clubs by conducting profitable business with them.

Kenya's sports teams are struggling with financial problems. The national basketball team had to raise money to attend the Fiba Basketball World Cup qualifiers in Egypt. Malkia Strikers volleyball team was nearly forced to withdraw from the World Championships due to financial issues. Kenya Rugby Sevens team is the latest team to suffer from poor management. Willy Ambaka, a senior player, took to social media to talk about the team's situation. Football is also in trouble. Sports CS Amina Mohamed disbanded the Nick Mwendwa-led Federation over allegations of misappropriation of funds. She appointed a caretaker committee to run football affairs for six months until November 11, 2021.

Kenya was suspended by FIFA on March 31. The suspension had far-reaching consequences for key stakeholders and the development of the game. Kenya's national teams and clubs were locked out of international competitions, delayed payment of referee salaries and disbursement of funds to clubs. There were match-fixing allegations and financial problems for the clubs, and top flight (FKF Premier League) is on its deathbed. SportPesa cancelled all of its sports sponsorships in the country in August 2019 due to a long-running tax dispute with the government. Sports CS Ababu Namwamba will have to give an arm and a leg to streamline the rogue federations.

Kenyan athletes have been hit by cars and buses while training. Female athlete was gang-raped by illegal loggers. Ababu has graded a five-kilometer-long sidewalk for use by local and international athletes. The number of accidents involving athletes in training has decreased since then. The sport has its share of problems. It is profitable in Kenya. There are problems with doping and lack of training grounds. Some officials have held firm on certain positions at the federations.

Kenya's athletics federation is still waiting for the outcome of a court case. Athletics Kenya held elections in May 2013, but they were barred by the court. Since 1988, more than 200 Kenyan athletes have been banned for doping. Most of them were banned because they failed to update their whereabouts. Since 2020, Kenyan sportsmen have topped the global doping charts. In July, Lawrence Cherono was provisionally suspended for testing positive for Trimetazidine.
