After suspicions about Série A, CPI will investigate match-fixing

Currently, the match-fixing is on the rise worldwide, with several cases and scandals emerging in the main football leagues in the world. This is due to the significant evolution of the sports betting market in Brazil and in several regions of the world.

Due to this problem, the Brazilian government is looking for alternatives to combat and mitigate these cases. Serie A football raised some suspicions and because of that the mayor, Arthur Lira, indicated that he will install a CPI for investigation.

Recently, UOL published an article by Rodrigo Mattos that details the establishment of this CPI and how it will act.

Game manipulation CPI advances in the Chamber after suspicion about Série A

The president of the Chamber, Arthur Lira, indicated to federal deputies that he will install the CPI to investigate manipulation schemes of football matches. The request for a commission was made by congressman Felipe Carreras (PSB/PE) and already has enough signatures to be implemented.

The CPI claim was made on March 14 by the parliamentarian in the wake of the start of investigations carried out by the MP-GO into matchmaking in Série B. This week, it was revealed that there is suspicion about six games of the Brasileiro from Série A.

There are already 216 signatures asking for the installation of the CPI. This Tuesday, shortly after the MP’s revelations, Lira told deputies that the commission would be the first to be installed in the current legislature.

There is no opposition from the federal government to the installation of the CPI. But the understanding is that the commission should wait for the regulation of sports betting. This is because, before that, it will be difficult to summon owners of bookmakers who are currently headquartered outside Brazil in tax havens.

In his justification, Carreras said about the installation of the CPI.

“Concern about the integrity of matches has been growing in recent years, especially due to the growth of online betting. Match-fixing has evolved and become much more sophisticated and targeted, even reaching other sports.

Sports betting these days goes beyond trying to guess the outcome of a match. They allow betting, for example, which football team will have the most corners in a game or even which team will receive a specific number of yellow or red cards, and then the gangs act. The sector’s lack of regulation still leaves loopholes that allow criminals acting in bad faith to tarnish the sporting result.”
