The 19th edition of the FIFA Club World Cup kicks off with this first round clash in Tangier.
Auckland City are the dominant force in Oceanic football, having won ten OFC Champions League titles, beating Vénus in last year’s final.
As a result, the New Zealand-based club are regulars at this competition too, although they’ve enjoyed little success.
The Navy Blues have won just five of 15 Club World Cup matches, two of which via penalty shootouts, finishing third in 2014.
Since then though, Auckland City have lost all three matches at this tournament without scoring, with that trend likely to continue.
Al Ahly meanwhile qualified as CAF Champions League runners-up as the side who beat them in that final, Wydad Casablanca, qualified as hosts.
The Egyptian club are one of the most successful teams in world football, having captured 144 major titles, including ten CAF Champions Leagues.
Having been crowned champions of Africa in both 2020 and 2021, the Red Devils have featured at both of the last two Club World Cups, with this set to be their eighth appearance overall.
At the last two editions, Al Ahly left with bronze medals, so are dreaming of reaching a first-ever final this time round.
Marcel Koller’s men come into this clash as big favourites, so will Al Ahly set up a second round showdown with Seattle Sounders on Saturday?
