All-time Man Utd XI of players who appeared in World Cups

The 2022 World Cup begins in Qatar. Manchester United have produced some great players who have played in World Cups.

Harry Gregg was voted the best goalkeeper of the 1958 World Cup in Sweden. He was a hero for his bravery in the Munich Air Disaster. He saved a goal from Czechoslovakian attacks. United reached the quarter-finals but were defeated by France.

Denis Irwin is the only player to have played in a World Cup. Ireland won the 1994 tournament in New Jersey. Paul McGrath and Roy Keane also played a part in the team.  

Nobby Stiles won the European Cup and the World Cup with England in 1966. He played centre-back for England, but played more of a midfield role. Nobby's jig during the victory celebrations was referenced in Three Lions, the 1996 song by Baddiel & Skinner & The Lightning Seeds.

Jim Holton was Player of the Year in 1974 and played for Scotland at the World Cup in West Germany. United's team finished joint-top of their group but had to go home due to an inferior goal difference.

Roger Byrne played for Manchester United in the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland. He was a certainty for the 1958 World cup, but Duncan Edwards and Tommy Taylor died in Munich Air Disaster.

Steve Coppell played for England at the 1982 World Cup in Spain. He was injured in the fifth game against West Germany. Coppell was a star of Tommy Docherty's United side of the mid-70s.

Paul Pogba was instrumental in France's World Cup victory in 2018. He played a central midfield role in the team's victory over Croatia. His passes to Kylian Mbappe were some of the best of World Cups.

Bobby Charlton was England's outstanding player at the 1966 World Cup. He is regarded as one of the greatest English footballers of all. Charltons influence was still as strong four years later in Mexico.

Norwegian Norman played all five games for Northern Ireland at the 1982 World Cup in Spain. Norman was the youngest player to play in the finals at 17 years and 41 days. NorthernIreland won their group and went through to the second round.

Hernandez signed for United before the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. He scored Mexico's opener against France and a goal against Argentina. United's XI includes Hernandez, Javier Hernandez and Juan Mata.

Robbie Van Persie opened his account at the 2014 World Cup with a diving header against world champions Spain. The Netherlands went on to win the tournament and reach the semi-finals. They lost on penalties to Lionel Messi's Argentina.
