The Astros capitalized one a seven-game home stand by ripping seven straight wins off, and they’ll look to bring that momentum to Milwaukee here. The Houston offense is scoring 4.66 runs per game, while batting .245, with a .315 on-base percentage. The pitching staff carries a 3.19 ERA, with a 1.20 WHIP. Yordan Alvarez has a hit in nine of the last ten games, and he leads Houston in HR (.293) and RBI (41). Kyle Tucker has produced a run in five of the last seven games, and he’s second on the team at 33 RBI. Jose Altuve returned in the Oakland series, and collected a double and RBI over nine plate appearances, and reached base in all three games.
Cristian Javier (4-1, 3.25 ERA, 59 Ks) will get the call for Houston. The fourth-year pitcher has responded to a slow start with a handful of strong outings. Javier casually struck out five in six full innings against the Cubs to earn his second straight win last week, but his three previous starts away from Minute Maid have been gems. Javier tossed ten Ks in an interleague matchup with Atlanta, before earning victories over divisional opponents Seattle and Los Angeles, and striking out a season high eleven batters against the latter.

Milwaukee moved to 25-21 after dropping two of three to Tampa Bay. The Brewers avoided another sweep on Sunday, but they’d still suffer their fifth series loss of the month. The Milwaukee offense is 4.56 scoring runs per game, while batting .239, with a .314 on-base percentage. The pitching staff carries a 4.05 ERA, with a 1.26 WHIP. Owen Miller continues to be reliable, and recording a hit in eleven straight games, he leads Milwaukee in batting (.344). Christian Yelich collected a pair of hits in the series finale win over Tampa, and he leads the Brewers in hits (42) and runs (33). Rowdy Tellez restored order with his first homer in nine games, to bring his team-leads to 11 HR and 25 RBI.
Corbin Burnes (4-3, 4.01 ERA, 46 Ks) will take the mound for Milwaukee. Inconsistency continues to plague Burnes, as he’s traded five straight decisions. Burnes took the loss last week in St. Louis, despite pitching a fourth straight quality start, so there’s still positive hope for him going forward. Burnes has been a victim of run support, as he hasn’t allowed more than three runs in any of his last seven starts, and he pitched well in his last home spot against KC, striking out seven in six scoreless innings.

This could wind up being the game of the night if both arms can come to play. It’s somewhat been a tale of two tapes for Cristian Javier and Corbin Burnes thus far. Dating back to the two no-hitter’s last season, Javier might just be the best road pitcher in all of baseball, and he continues to prove that here in 2023. Burnes has taken a step back by his standards, but he’s still been very solid on the mound over the past month, and I like buying into the pitchers duel here. Aside from that angle, Houston’s been the much better team this month, and they should be able to steal game one behind the arm of Javier.
